Default Idiot Guide :)

Ok where to start,

Fly fished for about 7 years mainly river fishing on the River Wear nr Bishop Auckland.

Not been at all for about 15 years!!

so this season from June onwards I dusted the old gear off and thought I would get out with my son (first timer) off up to Derwent Reservoir, with my old kit!

we were greeted with... "terrible rod conditions mind" from the lodge

However a couple of hours and my son was casting well enough to get something like a decent distance.. morning passed into afternoon and I had my first bite on a Kate McLarren, I switched my son ontro a diawl Bach and within 20 mins he had his first fish.. 3 quickly followed for me on the same fly.

Anyhow!

I am brand new to ressy fishing, I have been 3 times since and always caught at least a couple, Dawsons olive being a favourite it seems up there, but there are a few questions.. well loads actually.

I generally stay in one spot for a couple of hours then if no action move.. should I move around more?

I have sinking and floating lines, are sinking generally better with lures or is it a case of trial and error.

Buzzers... what the hell are they all about, how do you fish them, floating sinking, fast , slow retrieve of again just trial and error,

sorry if some of the questions are stupid, but if you dont ask.....

Really enjoying my time back on the water... and spending my Christmas coin on some new kit!!

Thanks for any help in general on this stillwater fishing Malarky

Welcome back to fishing and The Forum.

Brown trout tend to be territorial so 30min is long enough in 1 spot ,but rainbows cruise looking for food long distances.but I think 1 hr is long enough.
If there is no surface activity, then the fish will be sub-surface .It's then time If you can't get deep enough with your floater/weighted flies to find out what depth the fish are holding/feeding with your sinker.
Buzzers as a food source are available to fish all year, somtimes up sometimes down, they move slowly.
