Default Loch Leven

Hi All, I am looking for reports on how Leven performed this season. Haven't fished it for a good while so wondered how the place is doing. heard of few big fish this year but what about consistency throughout the season?

I’m surprised only one person has replied to your question about how Loch Leven fished this year, especially with the numbers and size of the quality Brown Trout it produced throughout the season. I could stand to be corrected here, but I believe the biggest recorded was 7lb 2oz (Brownie) ........ awesome!

I can’t give accounts for the whole season as my fishing calendar took me away from it from June onwards, but the early season fishing was tremendous and we couldn’t wait till our next visit, I’ve attached a few photographs as a sample, of the quality the fish myself and my boat partner caught on our many visits during April, May & June.

There was quite a mix of size of fish as also, from around the pound mark (which was very encouraging to see) right up to 4lb and 5lbs, with fish of 2-3lbs being quite common. Plus, there was always the chance of hooking into an escapee rainbow that has come down the burn into the loch. Now, that’s not bad for a Loch that hasn’t been stocked since 2006, how many of today’s fickle anglers would pay their hard earned on a full day’s fishing on a fishery that hadn’t been stocked for 3 years, my answer to that question is simple with Loch Leven ”I wouldn’t give it a second thought”. When you see the quality of the fish in the pictures you will see why, that’s why I can’t wait till it opens up again next season, you just never know what that next take will produce.

The early season fish in the photographs were mainly all taken on deep lines with mini lures, palmers and traditional variants etc, the water clarity was around 1.5 metres in April but steadily increased to around 4 meters later on in May and into June, the dreaded bung coupled with buzzers and bloodworms produced well in the clear water when conditions allowed.

I didn’t get to fish it much after June, only managed one visit and the water had clouded up somewhat, but there was plenty of large fish showing on the fish finder. The bright warm almost calm conditions didn’t help either that day, but my boat partner landed two fish, one of around 3lbs which he returned.

That’s my account of Loch Leven this year, only sorry I didn’t get to fish it more later on in the season, enjoy the pictures.

my early mornings were outfished with my evening sessions this year, muddled snatchers ,yellow owls and suspender buzzers were the top patterns ,overall great fish all year ,the loch is a ***** as we all know but still has the -best trout in this fair land.
Had a walk up one of the feeder burns yesterday found 5 dead trout, all at least 5lbs or more, makes me feel good that a lot of anglers return the larger ones at the loch as this surely will help the future stocks.

Default Leven

I can honestly say that Leven has got better and better since the stocking stopped (maybe due to the quality of the water), this season was no exception. The day sessions fished best up until June then they became harder but the early morning and evening sessions started to pick up.

It surprises me when a brown trout fishery such as Leven (in the past) or Carron Valley decide to stock with rainbow trout there is such an outcry about it, then when Leven stopped stocking rainbows there are so few people that fish it!!

I know that Leven is not an easy place to fish but if you put the time and effort in then the rewards could be a fish of a lifetime.

ps. you also need the right flies
