Default Heathcote Lake, Leamington Spa

After a 5yr break in fly fishing I've decided to get my 10yr old roped into it too.

We have planned a visit to a local still water (Heathcote Lake near Royal Leamington Spa) http://www.heathcotelake.co.uk/

Luckily my work for today fell through so I thought I'd go for a recce and blow some cobwebs away prior to going with the laddie tomorrow.

£26 later I've a day ticket with 5 fish bag and an empty lake.

Started at 0900, was leaving the carpark at 1030 with 5 fish weighing 11.5lbs!

I tried a GPTN on floating line, slow sink polytip without much success so plopped for a damsel/olive tadpole and allakazam!

Enjoy myself? Yes, but this was the main reason I stopped still water fishing years ago and took up the river rod; saying that I had some good fights and the tails were almost complete, so can't really grumble. No one else on the lake seemed to be having as much luck/flukes as me tho.

It has served a purpose tho, giving me some confidence and an ideal venue for my boy to (hopefully) catch his first flsh on the fly.

Kind of lost what to do for the rest of the day now tho, LOL

Cheers

Rick

Like you..not my cup of tea but an ideal spot for a youngster to cast his first line.

If you want an alternative, try Bransford over near Malvern. Much prettier and he will catch fish. I take my Grandchildren there and we have always been made very welcome.

I will echo that, pretty easy fishing, however there is a very small pool for c/r.Free tea/coffee,fridge to place your catch in,and if its easy peasy then a lunch break at the boozer down the road is recomended, great grub at sensible prices and decent beer-and you can take littleun in
