Default Lilly Loch hard day ..........

Hi Guys

I fished the Lilly Loch yesterday with a buddy (forum member also) a cold start it dropped to 0 oC as we hit Slamanan ! and - 1 oC as we passed Caldercruix However the sun was bright and the winds were light.

Bought our permits £8 , the guy said at first light there had been fish rising all over the place dispite the cold and flat calm conditions. However there was little signs of surfaced activity by the time we starte fishing say about 8.30am.

Lots of noisy canda geese, tufted ducks few pochard kicking about and a handful of swan that seem "huge" for some reason ?

The water as always was almost crystal clear with plenty of aquatic life.

Lots of bait fishers a friendly bunch on the whole most willing to have a natter and offer advice. Turned out to be a hard day most bait fishers seemed to blank dispite there worms, maggots and powerbait ! from what i heard the number of fish taken could be counted on one hand !

Strangly there where fish some in the 5lb range !! jumping clean out the water but ONLY right out in the middle ??? we saw nothing jump anywhere near the bank ?? There was a good number of little red sedge's kicking about.

Fishing a floating line and 14 ft leader with a skinny PTN on point and a clan chief on the dropper i got a savage take kind of made me jump as it was really unexpected ! An excellant scrap before bringing a 18" 2.25 lb Rainbow to the net the wee PTN firmly imbedded in its top jaw even being barbless i had a job getting it out !! Sadly it was my only offer of the day we finished at 3pm a nice day enjoyed it dispite only one fish.

I really should have played with a Di 3 and boobys maybe next time..................... Forgot to mention my fish had twelve shrimps in it all about size 14 !

You sure those fish were "jumping" and not "crashing" fry ?? The cold weather and time of year makes the fry bunch up in deep water followed by the trout .
Why could you not tube to the middle ?? no tube on the day ???

Hi

Bank fishing mate, hence no tube.

Only place we saw fish "jumping" / "crashing" was right out in the middle no idea as to why ? Would have thought the fry would come in to the shallows to try and escape ?

Not when it is cold , they will find deep water for the winter and stay there. All the smaller shoals will start to get together to form bigger one . Sometimes they will lay flat on the bottom like a carpet and not show on the finder and other times they ball up into all sorts of shapes . If you get a warm day they will rise .
I have been out pike fishing with the fish finder to find the shoals of fry/bait fish and found nothing but then for some reason ( light levels/warmth ?? ) later in the day they start to show on the finder as columns and mushroom clouds .
In the water I fish , over 50 feet deep and the shoals come from nowhere and are upto 30 feet deep and many many meters across in water that showed no fish 30 mins earlier .
Not sure where I was going with that and will shut up now .Sorry I started to go on a bit there , but hope you see my point , cold weather = fry in the deeps
