Our club was out on saturday. felt like asking for my money back!
It was like fishing in a thick pea green soup!
we did manage 11 fish for 17 rods, with 9 blanks. 5 brownies were caught and released.
the guys that caught are all good anglers, but they had to work extra hard to catch.
I think they should have closed the water until it clears.
apparentley nobody knows whats caused the problem.

So it was not as good as Grafham mateWell lithgow has got a water problem ,Sepa are looking into it but ain`t come up with any answers as far as i hear,Its a shame as the place is stuffed with troots ,Mabye needs a right hard winter to sort the problems out as do other waters in the central belt ,Hopefully it can be sorted before 2010 season just have to keep our fingers crossed ,I hope your club member has not broken any bones and makes a speedy recovery Taj

One of my favourite waters and could,nt believe they actually took our money . I am not saying i should be catching fish but feel that i am a competent angler and normally do well . Couldnt see your flie,s after 5 inches in the water the least they could do is offer the club a free outing

They dont have to look far.......200 swans on the place adds up to a fair amount of swanshit. All that on top of what is already a naturally very rich loch...no wonder theyre getting massive algal blooms.

The place went tits up as soon as they upped the stocking density ( numbers and size) and put 20 boats on it........ but thats probably another thread.

Thats a good point WeeJimmy that amount of S**t going in cant be helping and then you have geese, ducks on top ,Equals a load of dung nae wonder the weed growth is so prolific round the pier,I have seen what seagull s**t does to the paintwork on a car so i worry that Swan ,geese and duck s**t is as acidic and what its doing to the water

Its a shallow loch Toshka, weed growth has always been heavy on it.The blooms are down to over-enrichment.The number of swans must contribute to that,no doubt about it.
Is that nob end still coming down every day and feeding them with sackfulls of bread ....?

glad it was not just me and my brother who feel this place is off.

we fished it last month and almost every second family that showed up had a loaf of bread or 2 to feed the swans , geese , seagulls etc.

at one point my brother and i were almost casting into the other boats even though we all had the anchors down some of us were drifting as they had nothing to grip into. a couple of lads in one boat even ended up banging into us so we had a chat for a min or 2 lol, and later on they passed us and asked had anything , nut what about you lads you had anything , nut nothing not even a pull. we asked the guys in the office what fly to use , f*****g anything mate thats bright orange eh , orange booby mate and a f*****g blob. then asked what there feeding on and got the reply back off f*****g dont have a f*****g clue eh lads , there feeding on something but we dont have a clue at all. the swearing does not really bother me as i swear my self but not as much as that lol.
so it sounds like there a clueless bunch or are if you ask what the fish are feeding on. bread flies might be an idea lol.

Sounds depressingly familiar......Lithgy Loch at one time offered arguably the best imitative fishing for grown on naturalised rainbows in Scotland.I used to live on the place during the 80s to mid 90s.Back then there were 8-10 boats, plenty of room for everybody and the fishing was both challenging and rewarding....a nymph and dry fly fishers paradise. Nae ****ing orange rubbish in those days. That sort of stuff only worked on the fresh stockies.Once they had settled in and begun to feed on the abundant food supply they were a different kettle of fish to catch with anything other than nymphing techniques

It was stocked far less frequently with fewer, smaller fish which doubled their size in a year and were a joy to behold and catch.Proper fishing.... nainyerpish that goes on there now.20 boats......****in ridiculous....

Not the swans. Loch is eutrophic with high ph was 7.8 last time tested. Combination of higher than average rainfall, giving phosphate run off from surrounding agricultural land, and longer sunshine hours, ie longer daylight hours cause massive algal blooms on linlithgow loch, have done for years. need severe frost to kill algae, but this in turn may cause oxygenation problems as algae dies and sinks to bottom (ie fish kills.through lack of oxygen) Is no instant solution im afraid.
regards
bert.
