Straid Fishery Report
Last week saw temperatures plummet to freezing at Co. Antrims largest fly fishing facility. Freezing conditions in the mornings gave way to very bright conditions by mid afternoon and fishing tended to be tough. The weekend saw some much needed cloud cover and as a result the fish started to feed more freely and anglers enjoyed some great sport on the 22 acre lake.
Top rod for the week was B. Crawly who landed 20 lovely fish on Sunday afternoon with all his fish being taken on a Hares Ear. Indeed many anglers thought that the cold weather might put the fish onto the bottom but these anglers soon found that they were actually going down past the feeding depth and it was only when they pt on the floaters that they had some success.
Keith and Sandra Moffett enjoyed a good day afloat bringing 26 fish to the boat using Diawl Bach nymphs fished on a washing line method. Donald McClearn from Dromore fished small nymphs to tempt 9 to his boat. Cecil Barron used a tadpole to tempt 9 to the net taking 2 for 4lb 7oz. Joe and Mark McWilliams fished Straid’s favourite lure the sleetch to tempt 16 to the boat. Jackie Childs fished small wet flies on a floating line to land 8 with the majority of his fish coming to a butcher pattern. Harry Graham from Belfast fished dries to tempt 10 to the boat with CDC’s taking most fish.
Boats are booking up quickly as anglers get their names in for the Boxing Day competition and at time of going to press a few boats are available so if you want to fish this event from a boat then now is the time to book your place.
Straid is offering anglers the opportunity to purchase bulk discount permits which make ideal Xmas presents. These tickets offer the angler fantastic savings. A leaflet detailing these prices can be obtained from the fishery on 02893340099 and leaving your details with fishery staff. You can also purchase these tickets at the Angling Ireland Show at the Kings Hall in January.
