Default Ravensthorpe?

Hi all,

Whats Ravensthorpe been like lately? Had a tough day at RW the other week, and being a beginnner, Ravensthorpe caught my eye as being alot smaller and maybe more manageable (and hopefully more chance of not blanking), but have never been there.

thanks

Not good at all at the moment. They have a problem with algae at present, so much so that the water is as clear as pea soup.

A colleague went last Friday. The fishery manager said "You can go and try, but I don't hold out much hope.". He had 2 hours casting practice and that was it. Didn't see anything moving at all.

Would definitely be worth calling the lodge and finding out what the latest conditions are.

Default Ravensthorpe

Bunch of my mates were down there on 6th Sept and had the same advice from the warden as the water was very green and returns had been poor.
Everyone had fish and one pair had plenty sport and proceeded to land 19 fish on claret muddlers, snatchers and other small pulling flies on intermediate lines. Maybe not as hard on some days as others, there again thats fishing

Pitsford is supposed to be fishing well but Elinor is the best value in the area until you get used to really big waters.

Doesnt sound too good, I'll ring them closer the time. What about Eyebrook? That close-ish to me also.

In my experience, Eyebrook is often disappointing - supposedly a "superb top of the water" venue, but more often than not I find it responds best to pulling.

I would definitely recommend Elinor for a beginner. If you are worried about casting, take a boat. It's the most heavily stocked venue in the area and the fish are nice quality.

I'll take a look and give them a ring. The main thing is I'm taking my 11yr old son with me (he's just got into fishing in a big way) and after blanking at RW, I could tell he was a bit down, so I just want to give him the best chance of getting a bend in his rod. So important for youngsters to catch I think, which isnt always that easy!

Agree with Charlie on this one; I like Elinor a lot; not too big either, although nothing is guaranteed ever. I'm hopeless at Eyebrook.
I seem to recall checking the Anglia water reports this week and R'thorpe was the highest return per rod, and it isn't as daunting as Grafham or Rutland. Just checked that and it was average 4.9. (are these accurate? I don't know)
Draycote is another venue if you are looking for a reservoir. Great fellah runs it; could not be a more helpful 'warden' around, and I believe it's fishing quite nicely.
Blimey, I'm banging on here; it's 'cos I can't get out anywhere until week after next,
Good luck, Del.

Si, I've sent you a PM with some ideas as to how you might approach Elinor with your lad.
