Hi Marvin,

Cantref Reservoir is closer to Merthyr Tydfil than Brecon! It's a stocked res, with rainbows, although, there is the possibility of catching a wild brown trout; they come in to the lake from the Beacons mountain streams! I believe the fishing is quite good; but not easy! I don't fish there, but a number of anglers from MTAA fish there on a regular basis. It's a deep reservoir so wet-fly and lures seem to work well, there is an old-timer from the club who fishes only dry fly on Cantref, he does quite well, he uses two dry flies one on the point and a dropper almost 4ft above; he's in his 80's and fishes old style! As I said, I don't fish Cantref, but from what I hear, it's quite a productive lake!!

If you are up there on a thursday look for a gentleman in his early fifties short with grey hair and glasses he drives a big blue ford people carrier and his name is russell. He will be more than happy to help he is also a federation of welsh anglers coach.
hope this helps

Thanks very much!
I really appreciate your advice, might get a few of those flies
