Fished it yesterday for four hours from 4.45pm til 8.45pm. Many anglers leaving saying it was tough going but they had had fish, albeit they had been there all day. Jamie (owner) said that they were taking emergers but that if I could wait til dark then they would really come on.
After accidentally locking the keys in my car and making arrangments for my dad to bring my spare set down I set off. Started off with buzzers but they were sinking out of that crucial top couple of inches. Some small black flies with reddish legs around. Tried a black fly with a little orange parachute post to it. A confident take by a small but perfect rainbow of about 1 3/4lb which was photographed during release. Apologies for the pictures which were on my cameraphone.
Continued to fish but was now struggling to keep the fly afloat. The rises tailed off and it went quiet again. Tried a flexifloss bloodworm but to no avail. It was raining (coat in the car) so I thought I'd head to the lodged for a cup of tea and a rethink. Unfortunately the kettle and tea and coffee are no longer there and are replaced by a machine. Guess where my change is....in the car.
Headed back out and tried a CDC buzzer. One rainbow slides right passed the fly without so much as a cursory glance. Then up comes a brownie from the depths and ever so slowly gets closer to the fly from right underneath, taking a real close slow look before taking it. Again only about 1 1/2lb but another beautiful fish. Again photograthed during return, so apologise for the rushed image.
Had problems after that keeping the CDC afloat. Tried four similar flies but all sank after the first cast. Not sure why this was? Maybe too much sinkant. What was crucial is that the fly floated and the tippet sank otherwise I was wasting my time. Darkness started to fall and the rises started again. Tied on a daddy in the dark. Nothing so thought I'd pull it in slowly before heading off. A solid thrashing take and it was off again. Felt like a better fish but it had pulled the fly off at the knot. Probably a poor knot in the darkness but could have been that my tippet needed replacing too.
Headed off home having enjoyed the evening. It can be a difficult place at times but the surroundings, quality of fish and great advice from Jamie made it another lovely experience at Garnffrwd. Seriously, if your down this way give it a go.
