Second that. Unless your idea of fun is being hemmed in from all directions by anchor ******* fishing out the backs of their boats........with spinners.

Now now Pete don’t put Farmerbob off

Esthwaite is a really nice place to fish and I have enjoyed many good days fishing on the place. It’s a real shame what they are doing to the Esthwaite fishery and they still need our support as anglers. David and AJ do a sterling job in trying to promote the fishery by introducing the younger generation into the sport, it may not be every body’s cup of tea and fish quality puts a few people off but I’m sure there are a lot of younger people who have benefited from an experience at Esthwaite.

The pairs comp that Esthwaite run is a really good day out and the prizes are well sponsored and a good crack with the lads who support the event

Check the Esthwaite website out for information on how its fishing but I would bet that small lures will be catching on slow sinking lines, cages, weather station and deeper areas etc, but if you ask David and AJ (Alex) they will always put you straight. A good set of lads!

I will be supporting the Pairs final on the 5th of September with my mate Hagrid, looking for my second victory! watch out Henshaw and lakey! Oh and Dave and alf a bitter Baz! LOL

Decent fly fishermen will always out fish those tourist anglers who pay for fun and anchor up! So fish where they cant fish! For example not round the cages! the rod average is a lot better than most fisheries at this time of year and gets better from now on in!

Fished Esthwaite last weekend and I have to say it was not the water it has been. No Rainbows showing at all to any anglers but lots of small browns being taken on worm and spinner. Even the guys in the shop were down beat. Having fished there every year for the past 4 years I was surprised.

Like I said in my original post, it's a real shame what English nature are doing to Esthwaite water and I am not surprised that boys in the shop are down hearted, it’s their livelihood! I for one am sickened by the bunch of "do gooders" that have managed to enforce the rules on the fishery in the first place!

Salmonids my running through Esthwaite MY ****! they don’t even enter into the River Leven let alone Windermere, and never mind up the feeder streams and into Esthwaite! What a crock of ****!

Is this the future for all fisheries? Esthwaite was a place I could take my 2 boys and enjoy a family day out and teach them the art of fly fishing and I am gutted by what is happening!

Yeah. I was probably a bit uncharitable in my previous post. I visit only a couple of times each year and have always rated it an excellent fishery. This year's trip in May was disappointing as the quality of fish had taken a huge nosedive - some of the worst I've seen for sure.

Having said that, Al has a good point re English Nature and the stocking policy. As I understand - and correct me if I'm wrong about this - David was staring down the barrel of a brown trout only policy until a late agreement to deferral back end of last season. This presumably has left the fishery with a load of brownies whcih they were preparing to stock.....and a shortfall of rainbows. If they had to bring on a few thousand rainbows quick sharp once the decision was reversed then I can fully understand why the quality of fish is so poor at present.

The whole thing stinks - another example of poor decisions made by organisations who think they know best and yet no nothing. As Al rightly states, if English Nature are concerned with re-establishing migratory fish runs in the Windermere catchment then they should start by trying to get them into the system in the first place. They can clear as many feeder becks as they like, the Leven is practically dead as a salmon river. The problems are much deeper and difficult to resolve than taking the easy option at Esthwaite would suggest. Beaurocratric cobblers is what it is.

.......and the place would never make a brown trout fishery in a million years. Let's hope things manage to return to what they once were.

Matt
