Default Barton Fishery

Dear All,

I live in Barton under Needwood and visited the Marina this weekend. I didn't fish it, but I went into the ticket office and got some information. Here is some background.

The new part of the Marina complex at Barton was finished about two years ago and comprises a large pub / restaurant, about 10 shops (gents and ladies fashion, a gallery, butcher, jewellers, interior design, toy shop etc.) and a Thai restaurant. The pub and shops attract people from miles around and it gets very busy, especially during weekends in the summer.

To the rear off the pub and shops are two lakes (former gravel works), seperated from the Marina buildings by a large carpark. The two lakes are used by visitors to the Marina's other attractions and also attract dogwalkers, families picnicing / playing footie etc. There is a footpath round part of the larger lake. There is also a footbridge over it. The bridge is part of the main footpath from the village to the Marina.

I was told by the lady in the marina office that is the larger of the two lakes that is the fishery. I am not sure of the fly fishing rules as I have not yet fished it. However, the public currently have full access to the whole of the lake and it is very popular, especially in summer. When I was there on Saturday there was nobody fishing and a couple of blokes in wetsuits were swimming in the lake. I think they were setting up a course for a triathlon which is to be held there soon.

I would suggest that it is not the ideal place for anglers who are looking for solitude and peace when fishing. I also think that during busy times anglers will need to look over their shoulder when casting to avoid snagging people or pets.

I plan to go and try to fish it one evening when the place should be a bit quieter. I will post again on the quality of the fishing. I'd be keen to hear the experiences of anyone who has fished it.

Cheers,

Dovebob

would be great if it's good fishing, as i only live 30 mins away. which is less time than getting across Nottingham to get to Colwick.

planning on going this thursday , aslo been a walk round and it looks a nice place but can understand it could get busy but there are signs up warning public of back casting. spoke with one guy who was struggling to reach the fish as the all seem to be topping further out than he could manage to cast.about 5 miles away from barton theres a little fishery called donkhill only a small water which i fished last monday taking my 4 bag limit. all hard fighting rainbows which all ended up on the bbq over the weekend. if any one want direction let me know as it is a little differcult to find much infomation on internet about this fishery

I went yesterday (Sunday) to try it out, arrived in the morning to find a triathlon going on, lady in the office told me i could fish after 2.30. Anyway went back for an evening sporting ticket at 6.00. Tried a couple of spots until I hooked in to small rainbow just over a pound on a Montana fished on a 15ft leader down deep, took another 2 deep down on a gold head Buzzer, ended up with 7.
Nice lake, wrong place, dozens of dog walkers and visitors out for an evening stole and a chat with the solitary trout fisherman, became a bit annoying all the questions and dogs having a bath, bit worrying at times as the path around the lake is a short back cast from taking some ones head off.
A few details off the guy who collected my money, said the lakes have been stocked twice over the last couple of weeks mainly small stuff, but a few doubles to spice things up. The lake is 13 acres, with a causeway path and bridge across the middle, up to 60ft deep in places? Would I go again? Not at a weekend too many distractions, Mind you the 2 lady Joggers in the tight shorts, might be worth seeing again.

Gareth,

Could you post or email me directions to Dunkhill. I didn't know about the place until you posted and I would like to try it.

I will try and fish the Barton place during the next week and will post how I get on.
