I fished Moorhen a couple of times, in the early autumn of '07 and in summer '08, and like you guys I found it hard to get my head around fishing the place, although I had reasonable catches on a 3 fish ticket both days. The first time, most of the fish that were interested were around the aerator in the half of the lake to the right of the lodge and I had a good catch on dries. Second time, the fish were near the bushes to the left of the lodge, but you had to tackle them from some way off, dropping a stalking bug on their noses didn't work.
It looks to me as if the lake suffers more than many small fisheries in the South from the effects of hot, bright summer weather. This may be because of the comparative lack of shade from bankside trees and/or a lack of cool water from springs or a feeder stream, and maybe it lacks a really deep section in the lake ? The fact that they have to turn an aerator on perhaps underlines all this.
Nice people and a nice welcome, but the overall experience is not really good enough to tempt me away from Avon Springs and Holbury, plus occasionally Rockbourne, for my southern softie's small stillwater trips.
