Cool Assynt fishing trip

Hi,I am fishing in Sutherland next month and wonder if any members have fished assynt, veyatie or ailsh.Any help with fly patterns and in particular size of fly would be of help.It has been twenty years since I visited this part of Scotland and have little idea of what to expect nowadays. I will be fishing from boat and bank. Can I fish up to 6lb b.s (will be using floucarbon )or would it be advisable to fish lighter. If anyone can advise on any of these lochs and even better areas to concentrate on I would be most grateful.
How do they fish with dries ( ie. cdc )

Thanks

I haven't fished any of the lochs you mentions, although I have had a dabble in several of the smaller lochans around Suilven, and also from a boat on Fionn which I'm sure will be similar in charactar to Veyatie.

We found trad wet fly tactics to work as well as you would expect - Kates, bibios, bumbles etc. I would say 6lb fluoro would be overgunning it a bit though - there are some big fish to be had but the majority are in the 3 to the pound class. Some of the unnamed lochans hold surprisingly large beasts.....but you'll have to find them for yourself

You should have a Plan B in place in case the weather is against you. The big lochs are dangerous in rough weather. Visit Lochinver Tourist Info office and buy 'Cathel's Book', a guide to Assynt lochs by the local angling 'guru'. That should give you some options.
As to flies, I stick to my old favourites, sparsely tied Zulu on the point, Mallard & Claret in the middle and a Dunkeld mini muddler on the bob; bumbles and dabblers are good bob flies, though when these fish are in the mood almost anything will do. Size 12 in calm conditions, 10 in a good breeze, and 8 or even 6 in rough water. On loch Ailsh there's a fair chance of salmon, so go with 6lb line.
I use 6lb on all lochs because 'you just never know' !
Visit the Lochinver Larder for excellent pies.
Here's a fish I caught up there in June.

Have fun !!

Default Assynt

Get a copy of Bruce Sandisons guide and and OS map/compass and know how to use them(especially the map/basic orientation skills).Next try every water that you can and def the small unnamed lochs that look dour.Walk as far as your fitness and navigation skills allow and enjoy the backdrop as much as the fishing.Last 2 visits flies that worked were every conventional wet winged or hackled/bushy,dark/light drys, diawl bachs with red on them fished under a dry and last week a corixa(i will show you why asap).Dont be affraid to try anything new or daft it may just get you yer big fish.4lb drennan sub surface was max used.take the info on wading in bruces book as gospel truth as i have found his advice 100% so far.The other book suggested is very selective i found but thats only my opinion.Enjoy yersel and let me know how you do mate.

Default assynt

I am a new member to the forum and would like to thank everyone who responded to my request for information on fishing in Sutherland.
Will use your suggestions and report back on how the trip panned out.
We will be fishing at the end of August and I promise to let you know the results of our efforts.
You will notice I said we, as my wife (who is a very good angler) is fishing with me and will, if the norm prevails do a lot better than me.
Please don't mention the pheremones as she hates this comment and will tell anyone who makes such a statement that it is all down to her angling skill.
I for one cannot argue with this as she beats me on a regular basis(take from this comment what you will?????)
Anyway back to the trip. Praying for good weather, great fishing, fantastic food and malt whisky or a lottery winand not to many midges,is that a bit to much to ask? I guess it is.

Default Sightfree G3 fluorocarbon

Has anyone had problems with airflow sightfree G3 fluorocarbon ?
I have been using the same knot (three turn water knot) for my droppers for many years and have never had any problem, but when I use it on this brand it cuts through itself.I have tried 6lb and 8lb b.s with the same result.I wet the knot before the final tighten and test it and usually it doesn't break, but as soon as a fish takes it parts. The break is on the main piece of the leader right next to the dropper knot. It never breaks along the dropper length.
I have no problem if I hook a fish on the tail fly.
I have also used a four turn water knot with the same result.
