Thumbs up Allandale Tarns fishery report

Fishing at The Tarn has returned to normal, with skinny black Blakeston Buzzers, Black Dry flies, dark coloured nymphs and Yellow Dancer prooving a tasty favourite throughout the day sessions. Early evening anglers are bagging up with The Yellow Owl CDC and again buzzers as well as Hot head Damsel Variants and towards dusk the best tactics are various larger Black dry flies, the Shuttlecock Blue Dun CDC and large white dries also. As the temperature are virtually back to normal, most anglers are staying with the floating line only switching to an intermediate to fish patterns like comorants and Kate McKlarens during the afternoon.
Saturday evening finally saw in the first Dry fly summer league match of Allandale~v~Howwood. The results so far, with the away heat to go was 36 fish landed by team Allandale for 75lb 9lb, to Howwoods 19 trout landed for 38lb 15oz. Both teams were one man down and all fish were capped at 3lb, so both teams were at an equal dissadvange and I lost count very early in the match as to the sheer amount of fish that were well hooked but still lost!... However with the away match to go it's still all to play for and as Team Howwood will be on their home turf the next time, Team Allandale can't afford to feel too confident that the shield will be returning home yet again!..Feel free to give us a bell on (01506)873073 for more info!..Tight lines! *Iona @ The Tarn*

I have to admit that I wasn't here last night, but according to Wee Alec, The Tarn fished it's socks of with emerger patterns doing the damage! From about the back of 6 onwards, the Yellow Owl Shuttle cock CDC (14) was catching most of the fish and when that eventually went off, there was a burst of sedges for a while, but you had to work these along the surface to make the trout chase like Subs! As it got darker, most patterns using white CDC were catching, with or without a Buzzer underneath! The biggest fish of the day landed, was caught by Mr McSherry on a large Daddy pattern!.. We have in stock Daddy patterns up to a size 8 and believe me they are not big enough now, particularly towards dusk or in a ripple during the day sessions! Tight Lines!..

Hi Iona its Dale here, was up last night and had great sport catching 12 fish. Started of with a yellow owl which caught me seven trout one of which was a lovely blue of about 3 1/2lb. Once the wind gave way the fish got very picky and i changed to a size 14 ptn with a yellow tail on the point and a size 20 ptn on the dropper, 3 fish fell to the yellow tailled one and i had numerous massive pulls which i can only assume were hitting the size 20 ptn and i was finding it hard to make these fish stick. As darkness fell i started fishing a size 10 G&H sedge and caught another 2 on this, but hey what fun i had with the sedge as fish were chasing, swirling and splashing at it nearly every cast for about 20 minutes solid.
Most exciting nights fishing was had last night.Dale

Wink

Hi Dale! You should tie yourself up even bigger G&H sedges, I mean size 8 long shank with a strip of orange underneath! Another favourite on Saturday night was one of those huge CDC Bubble Sedgehoggs I tie as indicators. The black was working too but the white did the best by far skimmed along the surface!..

It's not a mistake!.. Lol!.. I think that we all generally think about going smaller with dry flies, forgetting that there are some huge beggars skimming about at times. Some of the boddies of the Daddies at the moment are easily 1 & 1/2 inches long and with the legs they stretch over 3& 1/2 inches, never mind some of the sedge species and upright winged flies! Although I've never tried tying a huge water beetle pattern which would have to be about 1 & !/4 inches and at least a half inch fat!.. Could be interesting!???..
