Default Gartmorn

Hi All

I'm fishing here for the first time this weekend. Not a scooby about the place, size, depths, holding areas, flies etc. so any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Z.

Hi Z, one of my favourite waters, takes me four hour round trip, but worth it. Sink tip or intermediate line [ cortland blue ] orange mini lures and green daiwl bachs, fish are caught all over, deep weed is full of green shrimps, ask the chap in charge of the boats which area is fishing best, he will tell you no lies as they want you to catch fish. Don't forget the chippie at the bottom of the road, their fish and chips and chicken suppers are magic, nice touch before you head for home. Good luck, there are some really big browns to be caught, my mate Frank had a beauty of 7lbs 12 ozs.

Thanks Billy, I was a bit apprehensive as it's not a water we hear much about and I haven't bothered fishing it as I hear it's also a spinning loch and bait? That kind of puts me off, but now I'm keen for Saturday to come around again.

Hi Z, mostly brown trout, they are going to make it browns only through time. They put a number of rainbow in for the summer. A wee bit of bait and spinning but only on the dam wall, it is for the youngsters, but it will not bother you at all. Good luck, let me know how you get on.

Default Gartmorn Dam near Alloa

Fished this a couple of times about 7 years ago and has a lot going for it. Plenty of weed beds, depths to suit and some nice brown trout as well. I caught one at 6lb 3oz and would have made 7-8LB if it was in peak condition.

One area just behind the island (its roped off so boats can't go all the way round) I hooked into a monster and it took me down to the backing on 3-4 occasions. After what seemed like an eternity, it turned out to be a big approx 20lb+ pike!! It was eventually netted and returned, but what a scrap on a trout rod with 8lb maxima.

Which brings me to my main point - at that time there was a good few guys spinning around the loch (as opposed to just the Damhead) and after discussing my pike catch, learned that they have a large population of pike, some very big. The spinners were certainley allowed to spin at will back then, but rules may have been changed since my last visit.

Any how good luck and let us know who you get on.

I think that they can still spin all round, but I have very rarely seen many fishing that way, still a brilliant water, most areas usually hold fish. 90% flyfishing I would guess.
