Default Chalk Springs Arundel

Hi

has anyone fished here in the last week? Just wondering as I might phone up to book a slot for the weekend? I have read some posts on how to fish it but wondering if the catching is good. Also, is it a catch and release site or catch amd keep? The website isn't the clearest on that or I simply can't find it,

thanks

Dainger

Unless it has dramatically changed there is no C&R and is basically a series of glorified stewponds.

Don't get me wrong, it is crystal clear and very challenging if you are genuinely stalking specimens....even then a very artificial experience and IMHO its not worthy of the reputation it gets (esp all the hype back in the 1990s).

I fish it regularly, and while i echo Texxa's comments on the small stockies, i do think it;s THE best place to try and catch a bog brown. Ive been incredibly lucky there and have had 38 double figure browns in the last three years (only one this year tho!) they are very tricky, but can be seen clearly and make a great challenge. The lakes are very small, but that doesnt mean taht the fish are easy. the big browns see it all in a week, so will be challenging to say the least. they CAN be caught though. keep mobile, and if you see a fish show ANY interest to your fly, stick with it. PM me if you want any tips.

Its catch and kill sadly, although the fish in my avatar was released, on 3rd November. I guessed him at 18lb and he took 30 mins to land, fought hard on a 7 weight

Good luck
Cheers
Alex

I think Browniebasher is being very modest...catching a specimen is pot luck, repeating it 38 times isn't.

I found stalking the big boys very hard going and they have seen just about everything thrown at them in their short time in there. Its a very specialist and you can often get a lead bug sitting on the fish's nose without so much as a twitch of interest.

I had a two fish ticket and after hours pestering the same few fish I decided to get my limit before I packed up...three casts fishing blind and jobs a good'un.

It could be distastefully easy unless you adopt a sporting approach

Thumbs up

I went to Chalk Springs today and had a very nice time. Learned a lot and my casting is coming along nicely, both distance and consistancy.

Started at about 8:30 this morning and bought a 3 fish ticket. Pinged my line about for about 3 hours, hooked into one brown but that escaped after the 2nd jump, and then caught my first fish (11:30) - a 3lb 6oz Brown (first ever brown and first ever trout unsupervised) from East Lake. That was on a goldhead olive damsel. I then moved on although there were plenty of fish there still.

I then went to South Lake and after an hour (12:35) I caught a rainbow of 2lb 15oz on a PTN.

After pinging around for about 4 hours on South and East lake, I caught my last of the day (16:45), another rainbow in the same swim as before on a black klink. This was 2lb 5oz.

All in all I had a great day and I chatted to some nice people. I will return when theres room in my freezer. I really want to catch a blue trout, they look awesome in the water there, but ws not meant to be today.

Pictures can be seen from the link in my sig - Look in Chalk Springs. If you use the Map This button you can see where the pictures were taken from on the lakes.

Thanks for your advice

Dainger
