I'm new to this forum, i've been lurking around anonymously for a few weeks, but this is my first post.

I'm heading to Lough Carra this weekend for 3 days, and was wondering if anyone out there had fished it recently or had heard of anyone else fishing it, and how it was fishing, what tactics and patterns had worked.

Generally at this time of year its fishes best on the sedge or green peter as its more commonly known ,and this involves going out in the evening and fishing well into the night ie.11 /12 o'clock ,the peter will not start hatching till dusk and when the do the fish should come on them soon afterwards,rises tend to last for anything from ten minutes to an hour,its great way of getting a large trout as the big guys feed confidently on these very large sedges which are easily imitated and the trout take them more so for movement than detail of the pattern.So far the hatch of fly has not happened yet,but it may be a week or two late,so hopefully this weekend you will be coming into the start of it,best of luck.

Thanks grasshopper, Im realitivly new to fly fishing, although ive fished all my life. I presume the green peter should be fished using a floating line and a slow figure of eight retrive, is this correct?

Yes when the fly is visible on the water,fish it dry on a floater ,if the conditions are calm,a green peter fished on its own will allow for better presentation especially when covering feeding fish ,the retrieve i use is a slow figure of eight to mimick the twitching and scurrying across the surface that the natural will make.While you are waiting for the hatch to occur,sedge pupa on a floater/midge tipped fish slowly can often work.

how you get on on Carra ??

Unfortunatly the weather was against us, still a fabulous weekend, but the trout alluded us this time. Caught a couple of decent perch. What a wierd lough though.... Reminded me of the movie cocoon, water was so clear and the lough soo shallow, all the rocks covered in a thick shell of calcium build up. Looked as though there where hundreds of alien eggs just under the surface.

Went out on Saturday with local Ghillie seamus megan, good lad, but more or less told us we where wasting our time. Talked to quiet a few locals who were out on the water, everyone blanked.

it can be a tough place when the conditions aren't right, but its one of nicest place you could be ! what part of the lake you go out from?? did you go out in the late evenin(9.30pm - 12pm)?

Stayed in moorhall cottage@Carra Boat hire, right on the shore at Moorhall. Fished friday night 8 - 11/12, Sat 10am - 2pm then the weather put a stop to that, Sunday didnt get out till lunch time but spent all day on the water came in for dinner about 7 back out by about 9 till 11/12, then monday 5am-11am back in for a fry and out again 12 till 4 when we had to leave to head home.

A good few hours put in, shame it felt like flogging a dead horse only saw one fish moving until monday afternoon when there was a lot of smaller trout feeding on a hatch of ...... tiny white fly.

Still, a cracken weekend, and look forward to going back and getting me one of those silvery brownies.

very surprised you didn't get some action in the evening and morning sessions, maybe the thundery weather didn't help !! . its a great location to stay, you right beside your boat and ready for the off at and time.
