Question Loch Coulter

I have thought long and hard about posting this - so with clear head here goes, i fished the loch last night with another forumite B-D a fantastic night light breeze but no broonies, we had between us dozens of small perch infact nearly every cast fishing three fleas three perch different line densities double takes ,problem or what., when we left around 11 we didn`t see one single rise on a perfect night... two guys fishing for most of the day had also blanked, catch return logs were full of pike n perch and s4ite fishing so what goes here ???? this seems to be a well run club with an extensive stocking program with a club with a few grand in the bank so whats up with the fishing here?? they seem to be blaming the pike for the lack of catch returns and there is a kill a double figure pike if you land one but leave the jacks alone policy, which i have been told by a very experienced fishery owner is probably only adding to the problem. I was also told by another forum member today that all the broonies in the loch escaped via the burn and that it is well known that stockies regualary escape via this route, I think this might be my first and last year on the loch as a paid member ..

Chris.

Yes, they've got their pike policy completely wrong. You leave the big old girls (any double figure pike is very likely to be a female) and they will eat many of the jacks. Pulling out the big fish means that jacks proliferate and you have a bigger problem.

They have deffo got this all wrong ,, in any other water the jacks are killed as its the jacks that kill most of the trout. The bigger fish kill the jacks

It just dont add up

I rem a while back sum1 killing a double pike at the Lake and peeps went mental ,, as this big boy helped keep down the jacks.

Ive passed Coulter a few times wondering how the fishing was ,, now i know ,, not good news

Chris Ive resigned from the committee as im well peed of as to how its run! The lads on the committee are shall I say out of the old school and arent willing to move with the times and facts the other 1/2 of the committee dont bother turning up for meetings!!!! Ive constantly said put the pike back but they seem to think killing them is the answer. As for Pike numbers they are down in a big way from the last 2 years. It has got too much for me aswell and has well and trully put me off fishing the loch and the club. As for the stocking policy its **** mate 2k of fish in 3 or 4 stockings you know that 1 stocking would be lost in 1 bay!!! You say a few grand in the bank try 27k!!! Why they wont spend is beyond me and give summit back to the club members?????!!!!! I cant blame you for your feelings and what your thinking but the AGM could be the place to change things the club needs it.

I kind of thought you were dissalusioned with the place mate, speaking to the guys fishing yesterday who were leaving as we arrived.. nothing to report for 8 hours fishing between the two of them and a great night and only i boat out.. that says it all mate something is seriously wrong here a great water going to waste because of bad management, thats what i think anyways maybe the next agm will be the place to voice my concerns either that or break my ties with the club or pushed whatever it maybe i think i will have my say

With regards to the above comments I will try and give the other sides points.
I have been a member for 10 years fishing loch & river weekly (weakly) & committee member for 5 so I have a good feel for whats going on.
The loch has always had a summer perch problem, however a jack pike problem has occured this last 2 years. This monitoring has been done in cosultation with Strathclyde Uni researchers and approved by Scottish water who we lease the water from, this takes time to approve & carry out.
After members approval at the last AGM the killing of pike is at the members discretion, to date only a few fish upto 10lb have been despached.Fly fishing only, this rule has only changed this month for members to spin for pike until the next AGM.
Yes the club does know it is better to keep a few granny pike for jack control (sorry jack if you think you are in control)
Trout escaping via a burn is untrue as the loch in/out flows are designed to prevent this(maybe pin fry not 3/4 lb trout).
Our current 180 members pay £65/year ,entitling you to unrestricted bank & boat fishing (6 limit)+ 3 free visitors + river Carron fishing for trout, seatrout & salmon from March till Nov. The club currently stock+/- 2500 A grade 3/4lb brown trout in the loch & +/- 1000 in the river annually (continually being reviewed). Not many clubs nevermind fisheries can compete with this.
The money in the club funds is used with an eye on future and present returns. In the last 6 years the club has built a new boathouse, disabled access, concrete slipway, replaced the lochs aging 7 boats with Simpson & coulam boats, resurfaced access roads and carpark, trees & blockages removed from the river,we are currently building a floating pontoon for easier boat access.
All these items & projects cost money & are carried out by the same few members/committee for the pleasure of the fishing we get
For the ex committee member, it is easy to complain if you attend only 1 meeting & table 1 motion for the introduction of rainbows ,get explained the reasoning behind the rejection then resign.
If people really cared for the club & its future wellbeing (most members do) they would stay & work for this rather than sit back & moan . Phew!!!! that was a rant.

I can fully appreciate the work ethic of a few members , it seems to be the same on most clubs. When we put a shout out for work to get done its the same ones with the same excuses everytime. Unfortunatly when there is a sizeable membership and a committee , its seems to be the old them and us chestnut . I fully understand where you are coming from and wish you all the best.

p.s. Moaning B*****ds will always be moaning B*****ds
