Thumbs up Beautifull Tal-Y-Llyn Lake, Mid Wales

Hi All.

I've started this Thread so that we can hopefully have regular fishing reports on beautifull Tal-Y-Llyn lake near Tywyn in Mid-Wales.

I'll start with mine.

I ghillied on the lake a couple of weeks ago and it was really sunny with a light breeze. Collette and John had a few takes but it was really too sunny and the fish were taking short.

During lunch, the cloud came over so we made a quick dash for the boat and we drifted the top of the lake with a Silver Invicta on the point, a small Gold and Black Dabbler on the middle dropper and a small #14 Goats Toe on the top dropper with a Fast Glass.

We had some fantastic fish to the boat up to around 1lb 8oz and a few wildies around 8oz that were really strong for their size - mostly on the Dabbler. Collette lost a big one by the stream up the top, but I understand that there's been some big fish coming out including a Sea Trout of around 6lb and a Brown around 10lb?

The fishery has a new Owner that's a fisherman himself and the fresh attitude we as anglers need. I would also like to wish Phil all the best with the running of the fishery.

Visit this site for more info www.tynycornel.co.uk or hopefully we will have regular posts on this thread...

Might see you there!

Shane

Thanks for that Boobies, and thanks for your avatar I now have three great reasons to visit your thread on a regulasr basis

Good to get some feedback on 'the Tal'... it's had one or two issues in recent years and the fishing has been up and down. Last time I fished it was probably around the start of this dodgy period (2000 ish) and I suffered a, shall we say 'less than frantic' day in seemingly perfect conditions. To be fair, I had not fished it for five or six years prior to that, but we used to on a regular basis through the late 80's and early 90's when super olive hatches, beetles falls etc used to keep sport to a very exciting level, and top-of-the-water at that
Sounds like maybe things are on the turn, and, encouraged by your report I'll certainly do my best to get a day a float there this season. One of my favourite places in these isles to spend a day afloat

Hello bud.

I hope that Phil who runs the fishery will read this thread and contribute also - I'm sure he will....

not sure on the float tube thingy - used to be great fun on there

Just one more thing... I fished there last season in April when it snowed all day. I'm not saying this so I sound good but to show you all that it is still good fishing.

In four hours Jamie and I caught 28 fish to 2lb 8oz. All grown-on and wild because they didn't stock last year at all. Stocking is back this season.

What was nice when I was at the hotel last week was that the owner came over for a chat (and a good one at that). There's too many hotels/fisheries where the owners think that they are only there to take your money and have no personality... but I think that the face of the company and first immpressions are paramount.

thanks boobies for phone call, as you can imagine its been a very busy first week with every thing but am getting there the new manager is very keen to re instate tal y llyn to its former glory and with financial backing along with support from other fisheries like traws and brenig things are going well . there will be regular stocking just to take the pressure a bit off the wild fish along with extra boats, engines and competitive prices to keep anglers happy there will be breakfasts available along with bar meals when you come off the water and yes float tubes are allowed , the lake is fishing well with olives ,sedges and the coch on the water, best fish so far is a 10lb 12oz brownie and the first seatrout came out on monday tea time this weighed 6lb

Welcome back Tal-y-Llyn, you have been missed!!! It's been heart breaking to see one of the most beautiful bit of water in country going down the nick.

I can feel a fishing trip coming on!!

Thanks for the update Shane

Can I join in on welcoming the news that Tal y Llyn appears to be back.

It is the most spectacular location for a fishery, just being there under Cadair Idris is great, but, when you add the prolific fly hatches and the fact that most of the fish come off the top, there's few to beat it.

Then it's back to the welcoming Tyn y Cornel for a pint and filling in the book making a great end to the day.

Hello Sewinbasher - noticed that you are doing some damage on the Teifi again this year?!!!!

You will have to come up and have a day on Tal-Y-Llyn with me soon being as I only live 10 mins down the road. You're right though, it really is the most spectacular location and the food and quality of the hotel is legendary - it's all good value too.

just spent 3 of the last 4 days on Tal Y Llyn with a group of American Tourists (squeezed in a day on the Severn on the other day) and had an excellent time.

We had fish on all 3 days including 6 or 7 sewin to 2lbs taken from the stream area on the far bank.

Phil the new fishery manager (robroy on here) has some great ideas for the place including a monthly stocking to support the head of natural browns, tackle shop, more boats, float tubing and an all inclusive package of accomodation/breakfast/boat and fishing to name just a few. Things are finally looking good for Tal Y Llyn. Lets just hope that the man with the cheque book gives Phil all the financial support he needs to return Tal Y Llyn to it's former glory.

I've been guilty of avoiding the place for the last 4 or 5 years due to the bad publicity it's had locally and to some degree nationally but will definatley be back very soon.

For anyone who may be put off by the "expense", how does £24 each sound for a full day ticket inc boat, 6 fish bag limit, the chance of a sea trout or salmon, the best view in the UK and the warmest welcome you are ever likely to get from a fishery manager?? (and if you're very lucky a sneaky peak at Phils fly box!!!)

or £55pp for a B+B - come on, you'll pay that much for a Travelodge in some places - take the wife (take my wife if you like!!) for a fantastic weekend in one of the most beautiful places in the world, keep in the good books, earn those brownie points and also squeeze in a few hours fishing! that's what dreams are made of!!

Phil - I wish you every success with the new job and I apologise for missing you at Brenig on Sunday - we decided to give the sea trout another go after catching 4 on Saturday evening after you left. I'll pop over and see you soon to arrange the float tubing thing we talked about. If you need a hand with anything you know where I am.

Shane - It's been a while - I think the last time we spoke you were trying to sell me some ink cartridges!! congratulations to you and collette on your big day and I'll catch you soon at Tal y Llyn I'm sure.

Gareth
