Carsington Water
Weekly Fishing Report 11th May – 17th May 2009

No. of returns: 70
No. of fish caught: 610
Rod average: 8.72

Best Rainbow: 7lb 0oz
Best Brown: 3lb 1oz

Wind, wind and more wind!! That has been the theme this week! For the first half of the week those terrible North Easterly’s were back again, blowing up to gale force they made fishing impossible. But in the second half of the week when the wind had switched round to the south and settled down the fishing came alive. I can only guess that the winds had stirred up the bottom disturbing all the food that lives there and the fish have been feeding like mad. There have been plenty of fish moving on the surface whenever the wind has died down to a light breeze, but they have dipped back down as soon as the waves return.
Buzzers and diawl bachs are still the top method with black and green, damsel’s and orange blobs going well as well.

The best rainbow this week goes to Mr P Hindle. Mr Hindle landed a superb 7lb Rainbow. This monster fish took a mini viva fished on a floating line from the bank at Millfields. Mr Hindle was tweaking his flies back just below the surface when his prize fish came up and swallowed his fly and erupted from the surface before turning and making for the deeper water. It took Mr Hindle a good 10 minutes to win the fight and subdue the trout enough to bring it to the net.

John Hood has the best brown of the week with a lovely grown brown of 3lb 1oz. Unfortunately John did not say where or what he caught this lovely fish on.

Top spots for the boats this week were Tower Bank, Sheepwash Bay, Half Moon Field, Millfields Bay and Upperfield Bay

Top spots from the bank were Millfields Point, Upperfields Bay and Simpsons Bay

The best flies were Buzzers, Diawl Bach’s, Damsels, Black & Green lures, orange blob, and Bibio.

Tight lines for 2009

Give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Keep near the margins though unless you see lots of birds working in the middle when there will probably be fish underneath them.
Don't be disappinted if you don't see many fish moving as they don't show much on Carsington.
If you are over fish you will soon know about it. Keep moving until you find fish and work that area until takes dry up.

Good Luck

Iain

we fished it a week last sat, and caught loads pulling blobs, and then another load nymphing. BUT the key to carsington is to drift and stay on the move.I think because the water is so clear, dropping the anchor and staying put is the kiss of death, because the fish will soon move off.

Haven't managed to get on this year yet, so maybe thats what you're finding currently, but last season I remember one session where we anchored up by some fish after drifting all day and getting a bit tired and we proceeded to catch a shed load from the one spot (Upperfields area) - we moved before they did!

Cheers for the replies.

This will be my first visit to the water and to be honest probaly my second session this year so i'll be glad of just getting out onto the water.

Will report on how the day fairs.

Thanks

Steve

Smile Good Day Out

yep, the forecast was pretty accurate regarding the wind.

sorry i dont the know the names of the banks but we had the most success on the left hand side of the water (from the boat jetty) near to where the hut is for bird watching, drifting along.

we had a couple of rainbows and a nice brownie with a viva being the fly of the day.

Definitely going to have to go back some time soon.
