Hi
I fished the tarn with a group of 8 beginners over the weekend of the 8th May. Very windy Saturday but great and flat calm on Sunday.
Fished rising all over in the morning to black gnats and bibio. Most boats caught with best at 3lbs. Rising again toward teatime. Keep close into the banks and especially Tarn Moss
Best try using black buzzers.

Good luck - hard fishing

Cheers to you both
Steve

Tarn country.....

First trip of 09 for Graylinghunter and I to Malham Tarn today... a surprisingly nippy and southerly kept hatches and surface feeding at bay. However, the stiff and steady wind afforded us good drifts right across the tarn and we did manage to move the odd fish here and there. Here's the ones that stuck...

Phil with a beauty.. best part of 3lb (sorry about the water on the lens phil )

Mine, in his coat of many colours...

Hi Steve, Phil's fish was reasonably tight in.... like, under that tree behind him! Twas a propper Keystone Cops job netting the fish and in that brisk southerly... what you don't see is the pair of us draped in branches, fly line and leaders As usual, the guy on the engine hooks the fish in the last yard or two of the drift
The tarn fish do like to go tight in a good wind... The east bank is my fave in a good westerly, or the south shore in a north/north westerly. My fish was hooked out in the open though using a Di5 (without a drougue) to get 3 or 4 ft down.
Interesting you mention the Tarn Moss bank Steve... I was only explaining to Phil yesterday that Tarn Moss is probably my least productive part of the Tarn. I can't remember ever moving fish close to that shore.
I rose and briefly hooked an interesting fish yesterday.. interesting due to it's size... or rather lack of it! At about 12 or 14 oz it has the dubious distinction of being the smallest Malham fish I have ever seen My smallest last year, and previous 'record' youngster was a pound and a half! I wonder if this will be the season of the 'small' fish on Malham? I've heard no reports of anything over 3lb coming out yet.. there's not been many bookings or returns in yet though.

Phil... a pleasure as always mate. A great fish to kick yer Malham season off. The tarn always rewards nice guys The rain came and went, came and went after you'd gone. didn't manage any more fish, but got a huge tug on the sinker... inbetween pulls, smoking a fag, looking at the Kestrel etc etc
