BFTA were on roadford last weekend, see extract from report.

The fishermen: Eight BFTA members fished the water on Saturday – possibly the first organised group of float-tubers to test out the venue. Russ travelled from Leicester, Stevie from Sutton Coldfield, Sag and Simon from Weston Super Mare and Bristol, Tony from S.Oxon, Kevin and Craig from S. Wales and Dave from S.W. Cornwall. So a diverse group, although most had experience of fishing brown trout only waters previously, but mainly in Scotland or Wales.

To gauge the level of success of this day; eight float tube fishermen caught 134 brown trout and several perch! The trout ranged in size from a few ounces to some in the region of 1.3/4 lbs. Most were less than a pound in weight but fought very hard. Uncountable numbers of fish were briefly hooked and lost while being played. ALL the fish were returned to the water. A day ticket costs £12 and a concession £10. We fished from approximately 10 am. to 3 pm. It was bright , mainly overcast with a strong breeze blowing which occasionally produced a good swell on the water.

The successful method of catching these trout was to use small flies such as bibios, Kate Mclarens, hares ears, sedge hogs, buzzers, crunchers etc. but the real secret was to strip the flies quickly back just below the surface – this provoked the trout into quickly snatching the flies as they went by. As with all brown trout fishing, it was best to keep moving position, as they tend to stay down once disturbed or pricked. Sag was eventually extremely successful at the end of the afternoon, when he discovered and fished along the wind lanes where he hooked a succession of much bigger fish on an assortment of flies including bumbles. Dave became the master of perch catching when he deviated and put on a fast sinking line over 25 feet of water at which point he caught several in quick succession.

In summation: It was an incredibly successful and enjoyable day. This is as near to wild brown trout fishing that could be encountered anywhere in Southern England for a reasonable price.

Hi...

A quick question regarding the Crassula weed at Roadford, I have never been on the banks of Roadford and would be grateful for any info on the effect the Crassula weed had or not hand on the bank fishing...SW lakes website gives no info on the current situation...Is bank fishing possible ? or will boats need to be hired.

Thanks
