Default Pitsford Risers

Have been fishing pitsford fairly regularly lately and have seen plenty of fish rising particularly during the evenings, but have found them quite difficult to tempt. Have tried buzzers, nymphs-crunchers, diawl bachs etc with little success. The only way I managed to get any offers is by ripping an orange blob through them. Has anyone else found these fish tough to catch at Pitsford or might I be doing something wrong?

Hi Brownbow,

I've been up there quite alot recently just for the last hour of light. If you just want to catch fish then ripping the blob through ensures success but i love to get them on the dries.

I've been having reasonable success with suspender buzzers. Hears ear versions have been most sucessful. My three fly cast is suspender buzzer on the point, diawl back on the middle and a black bobs bits on the top. The crucial thing i have found is to only cast to fish that are close in (and there have been plenty so far!) to avoid tangles and to use 6lb flourocarbon leader. It doesn't matter so much when there is a ripple on but when it's flat (as it has been alot recently) then the light flourocarbon is a must. I've also found that the flies need to be moved with a steady figure of eight to get the fish's attention, can't seem to get anything static.

You definatley get more on the blob (the follows are pretty exciting!!) but this method has worked for me. I too have been struggling until i tried the suspender buzzer, i think its the way it sits IN the surface film that makes them work.

Let us know how you get on and i may see you up there somtime.

Cheers

Any idea what the fish are feeding on when they are rising mate, that would be a good place to start.

Thanks Chickenfish will definitely give it a try, might be just that they want the the flies very high in the water. I do like to try and get them on the nymphs and dries if poss even though the blob can be exciting at times.

Wee Jimmy,
The fish have been full of buzzers mainly black whenever I've spooned them. There have certainly been clouds of them hatching off.

If thats the case, you should be able to tempt some risers with dries.Try shippies,bits,klinkhammer.....black or dark claret.....
