Default North Third Report Week Ending 17/4/09

Another week of freezing cold winds meant fish were still lying deep most of the time. However over all catches held up very well for most of the week. Even with these freezing cold conditions the rod average stayed at a very good 3.33 fish, including nil returns. The average weight came in at a fraction over 2 lb 3oz.

Monday saw far better weather conditions, even if they were far from ideal, and this was amply demonstrated by the 26 rods of the Fire Service AC taking 88 trout for 179 lb 12 oz. Their best fish weighed in at 56 lb 12 oz.

It really was the case of finding what depth the fish were feeding at and getting the retrieve rate right. Most of the time this meant fishing the fly nice and slow. Anglers were generally favouring mini lures with black, green and brown being most popular.

Boat anglers were still doing best in the Bannock Bay. However, if the wind direction was right the Lagoons and Maitland’s Bay were also doing very well. Any bank hotspots seemed to be changing by the day and everywhere along the west shore line was producing fish at some time or the other.

Some great catches were made throughout the week, as the following short sample list shows. Mr Binnie, Bonnybridge – 10 for 22 lb 12 oz; Mr McKenzie, Rosyth – 10 for 23 lb 2 oz; Mr Wright, Edinburgh – 10 for 22 lb 1 oz; Mr Rae, Edinburgh – 10 for 25 lb 3 oz; Mr Fraser, Central Demolition AC – 8 for 23 lb 5 oz, best 7 lb 9 oz; Mr Walker, Motherwell – 10 for 23 lb 11 oz; Mr Paterson, Ayr – 10 for 25 lb; Mr Cooke, Hamilton – 8 for 18 lb 2oz; Mr Millar, Cumbernauld – 5 for 12 lb 12 oz (plus 6 returned); Mr Henderson, Coatbridge – 8 for 16 lb (plus 4 returned).

The fishery is now running a weekly Win a Free Day’s Fishing Competition. All people have to do is email us at info@north-third-trout-fishery.co.uk and ask to subscribe to our weekly newsletter and they will be entered into a prize draw for a two rod boat or two bank rods ( the choice is theirs). Please note only one entry per person is allowed and please enclose your postal address in case you win! Winners’ names will be published each week. The winner of last week’s competition was Mr Ross of Edinburgh.

Discount fishing is still available on all week days for the over 60’s and unemployed. Prices start at only £14 for a 10 fish limit. The new loch side car park and ticket office is also proving extremely popular, as is the free tea and coffee that is provided for permit holders. Petrol outboard motors are available for hire at £10 per boat.

Hi Barrzy,

You clearly have your finger on the pulse at North Third. Are you able to tell me why North Third does not have an up to date web-site? All I can find is an out of date 2004 site. I live in Bannockburn and have never fished North Third. I guess it's because I rely heavily on the internet to stake out where I go next. I am a beginner and don't have many fishing buddies so I don't get any word of mouth feedback, except of course your updates on this fly fishing forum. I've no doubt the lack of an up to date web-site is contributing to many anglers not giving North Third a try. I can tell you that is certainley the case with me. There's a lot of competition in Central Scotland and North third is the only fishery I know of that does not have a current web presence.
Customer service, whether fishery managers like it or not, is massively important, and I just feel North third put itself at a disadvantage compared to it's peers, with reference to this issue.

tightlines.

therealijn.

Default North third outdated website

I've never fished North Third but had planned to in 2009. When planning my trips the internet is a fantastic resource and I was really disappointed to see such outdated information. I'd agree that it would be wise to update it,there's so much competition out there. Website maintenance is alot cheaper than it was back in 2004.

I am not too sure about the web updates but if you e-mail the fishery on info@north-third-trout-fishery.co.uk and ask to be added to the mailing list, George will then e-mail the report to you on a weekly basis.

ANGLING REPORT FOR WEEK ENDING 01/05/09

Again miserably cold winds did their best to disrupt fishing but yet again catches held up very well on most days. The water temperature is now around average for this time of year but the cold winds have meant that sinking lines were usually needed to get down to the fish. As soon as the wind dropped then fish were moving well on the surface.

All the usual areas of the loch have been producing fish with the Lagoons and Maitland’s Bay doing especially well form the boat. That is assuming the wind allowed them to fish there! Bank anglers were doing consistently well in the Lagoons, Dam Corner and Robin’s Bay. The Old Boathouse is also now becoming very popular. No particular type of fly was doing the best and the real secret to success was getting the speed and depth right. This would often change throughout the day.

The rod average for the whole week (including nil returns) worked out at 2.39 fish. The average weight per fish was slightly down on the previous week and came in at 2 lb 2oz.

The following short sample list of catches shows how the fishing continues to be excellent over all. Mr Lauder, Hamilton – 10 for 21 lb 14 oz; Mr Munro, Perth – 9 for 20 lb ( plus 3 returned); Mr Black, Glasgow – 2 for 13 lb 2 oz ( plus 10 returned); Mr Maxwell, Linlithgow – 9 for 22 lb 1 oz; Mr Campbell, Edinburgh – 8 for 16 lb 12 oz (plus 3 returned); Simpson, Motherwell – 10 for 20 lb; Forbes, Motherwell – 10 for 23 lb 6 oz; Mr Rae, Glasgow – 5 for 11 lb 4 oz (plus 5 returned); Mr Brown, Falkirk – 7 for 17 lb ( plus 8 returned).

Evening sessions have now started and offer fantastic value for money. Session times for May are from 4.30pm until 9.00pm. Bank permits are only £17 for a 10 fish limit and boat prices start at £18. Please note that there are no evening sessions on a Saturday. The new loch side car park and ticket office is also proving extremely popular, as is the free tea and coffee that is provided for permit holders. Petrol outboard motors are available for hire at £10 per boat.
