Some places tug at the heart strings and Stithians is the place that does it for me. It's where I started fly fishing and whenever I go home to visit an important part of the 'going home' is a visit to the 'dam'.
Set among rough farm and heath land and with a granite boulder strewn shore it is more redolent of a Scottish loch and it's a world away from the experience of lowland Midlands reservoirs.
Put simply, Stithians offers superb fishing and at £14.50 for a 5 fish day ticket it also offers exceptional value for money for the visiting angler. The fish are full finned, firm of flesh and bright as sixpences. Fishing between 10.30am and 2.30pm I had five hard fighting rainbows all in the range of 1.75 and 2.5lb. The fish were in the upper layers and I fished with a slow intermediate and the following flies (all a bit chewed!).
To add interest I also had a couple of wild browns at around 3/4 of a pound that went back to consider the error of their ways.
