Default Sutton Bingham 9th April 09

Managed to slip away yesterday with a couple of friends to fish Sutton B.
Arrived around lunchtime and fished left hand bank looking from the lodge.

Plenty of takes for me and a few losses especially one good fish early on.

Fish stuffed with olive buzzers.

Two 5 fish limits taken of good clean average 2 1/2lb size rainbows. The other fisher turned up later and finished with two fish although missed a few takes despite constant harrasment from his two ghillies.'Er in Dorset had put a curfew on him so he had to leave early.Fish were pretty high up in the water as I had some take single dropper on the fall/drop.Varied retrieve but not stripping fast.

Conditions were dull and overcast with light intermittent rain and southerly winds.Water was a little murky.

Successful patterns were viva cormorants tied on 10's,stick fly, montana nymph and a dirty yellow bodied buzzer all fished on floating lines using mono as opposed to fluoro leaders to slow up sink rate.

It's worth a crack Toby. I have only ever fished it early season and it can produce the goods. The last time I fished it I was met by a grumpy regular who said it was never worth the agony of fishing through the wind an was packing up. I went on to take three fish over 3lb and some lovely over-wintered fish too

Just goes to show you have to be in it to win it

No idea... I think the ranger there is Ivan - may be worth giving him a call. Not sure how well the questions would be received though

A good plan... Worth a go at Chew too though Toby. This time last year it was fishing well with loads of Jacks (up to 10lb) and some bigger fish showing to one or two other boats. Moved some big crocs as well, but they refused at the last minute and melted away...

Exciting fishing though

I fished the PFFA event a couple of weeks ago and had 10 to the boat up to 11lb and lost loads as well.

Am fishing it again in a couple of weeks but might be up for a fish on Wen if you fancy a go at the Pike with me?

No problem Gentlemen I enjoy tales of Esox Lucius.

I agree you do not want to be falling in at chew as the big females go into spawing mode unless your name is DundeeThose hot orange life vests could be a real trigger

Word on wires is Sutton B fishes well early season. We tend to go odd times when we cannot make trips to the mendips.Fished it a few times in 08 and good fishing each time along with some cracking fish although they do not seem to have the tow in them the mendip missiles have.Variations on the PT nymph seem to be a favourite of Ivan the warden.

Our friend who came late fished more actual imitative methods than I did and when he dropped into spot I had been fishing he was getting confident takes on buzzers but missed several because of distraction and rolled a couple over.

I will be going again before too long but mendips in a boat next on the list.
