Default Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace have finally opened their trout fishery.
Anybody been yet? I bet the large resident population of pike can't believe their luck! (Or for that matter, the cormorants...).

Cheers

You'd have thought that at Blenheim Palace they would be able to spell "coarse".

Of course [sic] you would...

In the past the agent and head-keeper would probably have known that brown trout also had a close season.

Blenheim Palace Fisheries

Trout Fishing

Our top class Trout fishery is situated within the grounds of Blenheim Palace, home to the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough. The trout lake complex is made up of 21 acres of Bladon lake, with a bank length of a mile.
The waters are stocked mainly with Rainbow trout and Brown trout with weights up to 8lbs and will be open all year (except Christmas Day).

The fishery is split into 4 beats which are known as Rough Piece, Bladon, The Lince and the Formal Gardens. All these beats can be fished under one ticket although the Formal Gardens can only be fished after 5pm.

Interestingly, the 'Lake' in question is actually a much widened stretch of the lower Glyme I.E. a river. The passage upstream to the Main Lake is blocked by a 50ft waterfall but there is nothing to stop the newly stocked trout finding their way downstream into the Evenlode and onto the Thames below. Knowing Bladon Lake as I do I think that they would find it a much more suitable habitat.
Bladon Lake (the venue for last years game fair and not to be confused with the Main Lake which does hold a few large browns that have migrated down from the upper Glyme) is very shallow and silty with no plant life to speak of and very little insect life. Water temperature gets very hot in the summer and flow is very slow.
When I put this point to one of the keepers who was supervising the electro fishing operation to remove pike prior to trout stocking (they missed a few, I caught a couple on the fly the next day!!) he very stuffily told me that hey had had 'expert' advice that it was suitable for trout. Possibly from a prospective trout supplier… or am I just being a tad cynical? Round here we know all to well that the people at the big house know best...
Good luck to em. I can't wait for them to open it up for FF for pike in a few years time, they'll be some fat old girls in there by then.
I would be very interested to hear how it fishes and the quality of the fish after they've been stocked for a while.
As regards closed season for browns on stocked still waters I understand that this is under review by EA but as stated above this water could only be regarded as a river.

Default Report from Mrs. Grey...

So...
The other half fished Blenhiem today and apparently it's fishing urrr... 'Very Well' (Not her exact words, they were slightly more how can I say 'Descriptive').
She had 4 very good and hard fighting fish in 1 hour, had a small break to go home and gut and freezer catch and returned to catch and release a further 6.
From her description of conditions and fish activity it looks like the lake has been very heavily stocked with good quality fish. Only another 3 anglers there.
Anybody else been there yet?

Andy

What size were the fish? What's the day ticket pricing? Nymphs or Lures?
