Carron Valley is on a distinguished road
Default Carron valley report

Although the weather hasn’t been particularly kind Carron Valley has got off to a flying start with many great catches from boat and bank and some of the nicest over-wintered fish we’ve seen. Despite a hard winter both the Rainbows and Brownies have came through in fantastic condition and much fuller than we’ve seen in recent years.

The best patterns over the last week have been mainly lures although some have had success with buzzers during the recent sunny spell.

Dunkeld Sparkler was the best fly on opening day, catching most of the 27 fish caught by Chris Sutherland and George McMahon from Middleton. Largest fish in their catch was a 9lb rainbow however the prize was a beautifully conditioned three and a half pound wild brownie.

Peter Burnett from Glasgow Angling Centre had 5 for 19 lb 7oz including one at 7lb 11oz and another at 5lb.

Other catches included;

J Patrick,Kilsyth - 5 for 11.5lbs
D Paterson & A Martin - 10 for 19lb 10 oz plus 14 returned
D Splaine & G McKenzie (+2) - 20 for 39lbs plus 19 returned
J Lister & A Martin - 6 for 19lb 10oz Plus 34 returned

Best flies……..mini cat, orange blob, green & black cat, yellow dancer, silver butcher and bibio.

Fished carron today from the boat, my mate and I managed 17 between us with a mixture of rainbows and broonies. My boat partner, Robert Murray landed a truly superb wild broonie of around 4lbs, golden belly and a tail like a snow plough! Both gutted as we had left camera phones in the car! Fish was returned safely to the water. Doubt I will see a nicer fish!

Top flies included silver bodied snatchers, back/green blobs, black and silver boobies and usual traditional wets, all fished on either Di3/5s pulled. Rainbows in superb condition and if allowed, go like steam trains. Plenty of smaller broonies all in tip top nick!

Anyone reading this who is after a great days sport, put Carron Valley at the top of your list, arguably the best fishery in Scotland in terms of value, fish, scenery and 'crack'!

Thumbs up

Its nice to see Carron get off to a good start. Can anyone explain the capture of the large wild brownies? Are they grown on stockies or the real deal. In my experience the resident brownies dont push much over the 2ib mark!

Cheers

Default 2nd April

Fishing has been superb of late with some fantastic catches. Regardless of whether windy wet or dry the weather hasn’t affected some great fishing.

The bank anglers have had some superb results and best flies have been yellow dancer, black & green bibio, various damsels and some traditional wets.

T Kelly & C Baird from Ireland had 49 fish in total for their two days fishing.

The Grizzlecats caught a total of 124 fish with their top 3 rods catching 60 between them. Fraser Cuthbert had one at 8lb 13oz and one at 6lb 9oz and Alan Martin had one at 7lb 4oz

Ferry Fly Dressers had 31 for 59lb 10oz

Robert Murray & Davy Walker (or Matts boy as he’s now known) had 17 (including a lovely 4lb brownie………see above).

D & J McFall form Kirkintilloch had 10 for 20lb and a further 8 returned.

Bill Holleran Bo’ness had 10 for 20lb exactly and returned another 8

Derek McAlpine from Denny had the biggest fish he’s ever caught at 17lb and returned another 9

Aberfoyle Angling Club out today on Carron, 72 fish caught, 55 returned. Mixture of rainbows and broonies. Lines ranging from buzzer tip down to DI3s pulling traditionals and 'shuggies' took most fish. The bays at the top end of the water fished very well. Plenty of fish moving on or just below the surface for most of the day.

I also managed a powan of around 1lb, great scrap.

Another great day on Carron Valley

Great days sport on Carron Valley at the weekend the fish were rising everywhere in the morning but went down when the sun came out and the breeze dropped in the afternoon. We kept 10 and returned another 12 mostly rainbows avarage size being around the 2-3lb mark. the majority of the fish came to Di3 and and a mixture of lures.

keep up the good work Fraser.

Dennis.
