Default North Third Trout Fishery 2009

ANGLING REPORT FOR OPENING DAY – 15 MARCH 2009

The fishery re opened for the season with a bang on Sunday 15 March. A fantastic total of 400 rainbow trout were taken for the day. This worked out at 6.45 trout per rod, including nil returns and the average weight was just over 2 lb 3oz.

Both boat and bank fished equally well. Bank anglers were contacting fish over the full length of the west side of the loch, with no one area being a particular hot spot. As always at this time of the year, the best area for the boats was the Bannock Bay as this has the largest area of shallows.

Top rod was Mr Whitelaw, Dunipace with 10 trout for 22 lb 7 oz and a further 10 returned to the water. However the honour of the heaviest bag went to Mr Binnie of Bonnybridge 10 trout for 26 lb 1oz ( and 4 returned). Mr Binnie also caught the heaviest fish of the day at 7 lb 5 oz. other big fish included one at 7 lb to Mr Bradshaw of Glasgow and another at 6 lb 14 oz to Mr Millar of Clacks.

Most anglers were using sinking lines and dark coloured flies fished slowly. However some had equal success on hot orange or pink. To cap it all two anglers had great sport on ful floating lines and small nymphs. It was one of those days.

The quality of the fishing is demonstrated by the following short sample list of catches. Mr Hepburn, Falkirk – 10 for 21 lb ( plus 5 returned); Mr McDonald, Glasgow – 10 for 23 lb 8 oz (plus 7 returned); Mr Laird, Carronshore – 10 for 20 lb 4 oz; Mr Nicholson, Stirling – 10 for 20 lb 14 oz (plus 3 returned); Mr Golebiowski, Fife – 10 for 21 lb 8 oz (plus 2 returned); Mr McGinlay, Clydebank – 10 for 21 lb 4 oz; Mr Davidson, Airdrie – 10 for 21 lb 3 oz (plus 4 returned); Mr Henderson, Dunblane – 10 for 24 lb 2 oz (plus 8 returned); Mr Millar, Claks – 10 for 25 lb 2 oz (plus 5 returned).

The new loch side car park and ticket office is without question a great success and is receiving nothing but praise from visiting anglers.

Discount fishing is still available on all week days to the over 60’s and unemployed. Prices start at only £14 for a 10 fish limit.

Weekends are busiest and you would need to book for then. It is best to give George a phone before you head up to make sure.
