Default Helwith Bridge ...

Has anyone fished at Helwith Bridge Fishery recently and if so, can you offer any hints and tips as to how to fool the fish.

I had 4 hours on the water this morning in driving rain and wind with nowt to show for it - would be nice to go back and not blank the next time!

Kind regards

spider plus,

fish a midge tip or ghost tip with a black minkie or black cat on the point with a black buzzer on the dropper let it sink down a bit then fig of eight it back or give it a long slow pull this method has never failed me at Helwith. If success doesn't come immediately vary the length of time you count the flies down if still no success keep moving you will eventually find the fish. Also remember to fish your flies right up to the bank and let them hang as a lot of fish will be under your feet. Hope this is of some use let me know how you get on next time.
When are you planning your next trip?

bikeflyboy,

Many, many thanks for your reply.

I think my luck was out yesterday - another angler was fishing a cats whisker and had 5 out in 45 mins - I tried a cats whisker in the same spot after he moved on and no response. (off the jetty on the far bank)

I was fishing with a friend who had 7 on buzzers in the corner bay on the far bank - even took his rod for 15 mins and fished in his swim with nothing - he took his rod back and had a fish first cast so it wasn't my day!

Probably cannot justify any time next week with work pressure but will take a few hours off the following week to visit again.

Kind regards

I've had a day like that at Helwith, not a bite all day. To be fair it was a bright crisp day, with about 3 inches of frozen snow on the bank and barely a ripple. Nobody else was 'on fire' but most had a few. I just about bagged up first time I was there, but that day some of the guys had 'cricket-scores'. There are earlier threads on Helwith that might help you.

Black minkie and orange zonker worked for me on my first trip, on an intermediate, but I guess ghost tip would be better if you had one. I still enjoyed my day there when I blanked, we retreated to the pub for a pie and a pint to thaw out and that helped. Helwith is very deep quite close to the bank and it seems success depends on finding the right depth. I'll be back for sure.
