Thumbs up

I fished there today (sat 21st),

Were a few fish moving about but i dont think they liked the brilliant sunshine. I did . I fished mainly from LH bank as you walk in past the bridge between the new "green" bench and a large tree - slightly into the wind. Fish seemed to have shoaled up there - had a few takes in the morning but as the sun went down from 4pm- it got better (i left for a bit 2-3:30). Gold head blue flash damsels worked for me - got 4 hard fighting very tidy fish between 3:30 and 4:30 1.5-3lb. Mind you, BFD's seem to be invincible there this (my first) winter.

Unless you like eating stockies I cannot think of a single reason to go to Syon Park rather than Halliford Mere at half the price ?

Had 4 fish tickets to use up before they go out of date. Plus I can walk there with a major hangover .

Have been trying Halliford but its much harder - as a novice I have to worry about trees, bulrushes and then how deep the fish are!

I think its Halliford for me for future until the freezer is empty again (apart from the chalk springs event).

Yes I do eat them and yes they do taste better than shop bought trout.

The last time I fished Syon Park was this time last year. Had great success fishing opposite the landing stage, fishing into the wind and letting a blood worm drift down towards the overspill. I had a total of 7 and could have had more but I used up all my remaining tickets for the season.
I would rather fish the other Albury lakes as they are far more picturesque and there is pub and tackle shop close by. I only fish Syon as its fairly close to where I work.

OK, I understand it's handy and quite pretty but but it IS a ripoff. Halliford is tough in winter but gets better when there is some natural food about.

These waters that insist on catch and kill and charge £35-40/day are exploiting the novice in my view.

The good thing about Syon and Albury is that if you don't catch, you can return and re-use your unused fish tickets from last time. For the novices who might not catch, they can fish again the next time for about £10.00, I don't think this rips the novices off at all.

I don't think its that bad value for a novice.

I started from scratch there in october and didnt catch anything my first 5 times out! The bailiff chappies were very helpful and gave me some pointers on casting etc. Its only 10 quid for a day ticket if you dont catch (12 first time time get a card) as fish tickets rollover. Eventually when you start catching it does become more expensive - but still the average size of the fish is good. Now I feel I can probably catch 2+ on an afternoon I'm looking to try elsewhere.

I also want to learn to fish other flies - as Albury fish seem to be addicted to blue flash damsels. Looking forward to Halliford for this as the weather warms up.
