Default Neilston Black Adder & Millpond

As a boy in the early 70s i fished two waters in neilston directly across from the football ground,if memory serves they were the Blackadder & Millpond. As i sit here reminiscing i wonder are these waters still there and if so do they still hold brown trout?.

Ps i also spent much of my youth fishing and swimming in the Barrhead dams.I have read the post relating to the dams but have never heard one being referred to by the name we used The Major(it may be that i am going senile but i could swear that's what we called it.

I had a root around Google and OS Map but couldn't see Blackadder Dam altho' the OS map doesn't go as far as Commore ...could it be called something else now?...I did find a reference to a Mill Pond ,Station Rd in Paisley which suggested it was part of a canal but only canal I know is Canal St station?

both still goin strong though not managed anymore and badly overgrown and silted. My best from blackie was a fish of 4Ib 3oz if i remember and the lintmill produced many over 3 and a record of nearly 6 pounds about 15 years ago, sadly not to me.

Default Blackadder & Millpond

Blackadder is a great wee pond - bit of a mess though with buckie bottles and craters from folk digging out worms on the bank.

Loads of wee brownies but they get decimated by guys coming up with bait rods & maggots/worms catching the wee brown to use as deadbait for piking at the Barrhead Dams or Loch Libo.

I've never caught a fish or even seen one moving in the millpond though - looks ideal for fishing and have tried it couple of times but no luck.

the blackadder mill dam used to be maintained by english sewing mill and was in its prime almost 25feet deep, there were the biggest eels in it ive ever known. lintmill has great potential if it could be dug out and restored but no one cares anymore. Its only a couple of feet deep now and has a few perch and brownies left in it.

I have fished the Blackadder known as 'The Blacky' now

i fish it often but had a really good start to the year
i had a brown about half a pound and another at just over a poundgreat sport on the 5 weight
my friend was goin for minnows and he got 11 or so and then he started hitting into some brownies. In the end he caught 7 at many diffrent sizes biggest 3/4 of a pound. He had a good result because he was using maggots

any questions welcome...

cheers

p.s i have not been on this in a while if your asking yourself why a did not say this at the start of the year

Wee took a walk about near snypes and harelaw last week and the walk took us past a water which used to be run by RFFC, would this be any of the two you mention?

Hi Daddy P

The water up near the Snypes is the Craighall Dam and is still run by Renfrew Fly Fishers.

The Millpond is close to the Uplawmoor Road as it leaves Neilston at the bottom end of "the Bovis" (the housing estate on the south edge of Neilston.

Blackadder is a couple of hundred yards north of the Millpond near the Crofthead Cottages.

hope this helps
