Default Thornton 2009 Reports

Thornton Reservoir situated 4 miles off junction 22 M1, 10 miles north of Leicester.

The 2009 season opened on Sunday 1st February. The anglers that ventured out in the cold conditions, ice freezing in the rod rings, caught 42 trout with the majority taken along the shallows of the Thornton Arm opposite the lodge.

As expected this time of year the bank fished better than the boats with new member S. Naylor catching 12 trout on a black & green tadpole. Pete Broad caught 8 on a hares year while M. Webbon caught 5. A Topping fished a few hours in the afternoon & caught 4 while new member Mark Jackson fished the morning recording 3 trout.

As Im sure your all aware it snowing today but the water clarity although not great is fishable, as always keep in touch with the lodge for the latest report & advice. Lodge is open from 7.30am with boats available from 8.30am

Thornton Fishing Report week ending 08/02/09

Well what a start, snow & ice has kept the rods off the water but the rods who did venture out enjoyed some good sport with 29 rods recording 85 trout for the week.

Peter Broad fished the bank on Thursday afternoon in all those heavy snow showers & caught 8 trout on a hares ear & orange blob. Steve Naylor fished the bank opposite the lodge on Saturday & caught 19 trout on a black & green lure.

The most productive time to fish has been late morning & into the early afternoon with the shallows opposite the lodge fishing best.

It goes without saying that what we need is less, if any more snow & warmer daytime temperatures. As I often advise keep in touch with the lodge for up to date advice on fishing & fishing conditions.

Thornton Fishing Report. Week ending 22/02/09

At last the weather improved & the anglers turned out to fish with 189 rods catching 981 trout returning 594 for a rod average 5.2

The bank is the place to be with many of last weeks trout taken within 15 yards of the margins with a floating line or intermediate best with black & green tadpole, Montana, cats whisker & buzzers proving to be the best pattern with the period of the day from 10.00am – 3.00pm fishing best.

Mr M Clarke returned 27 from the bank on buzzers & Montana with his fishing partner K. Harding returning 17, season permit holders J. Smith & M. Pepper shared a boat catching 32 between them, K. Rana from London caught 11 for his visit while K. Sargent recorded 19. Darren Dodd fished with his son Luke who caught 25 on damsels & dawson olive while Darren caught 19 on buzzers.

As I write this report Thornton continues to fish well this morning & with a good forecast for the coming week I'm expecting another good weeks fishing. For up to date advice or information call the lodge on 01530 230807

Thornton Fishing report. Week ending 01/03/09

Another good week of weather ensured our good sport continued with 246 rods catching 1090 trout for a rod average 4.4 with the bank enjoying the best of the sport.

Floating or intermediate lines with gold head Montana, cats whisker, tadpoles, damsel & buzzers produced the majority of the trout with the late morning onwards been the most productive time to fish. Many of the fish caught were well within 20 yards of the margins along the Thornton arm, opposite the lodge, lonesome pine & wood bank.

As you would expect with over 1000 trout caught for the week there were some exceptional catches, Scott Wilson fished the bank twice catching 32 on his first visit & 35 on his second, Rev Chip caught 18 for his visit on cats whisker, Harold Pritchard recorded 40 for his mornings fishing while M. Griffiths fished the bank for the afternoon catching 14, Jim Green & John Hunt shared a boat & caught 65 while D. Leavesley fished buzzers from the bank & caught 17.

Thornton is not noted for its bank fishing but if your prepared to take the 15 minute walk to the shallows opposite the lodge its well worth the effort.

Thornton fishing report, week ending 08/03/09

Another good weeks fishing with 183 rods catching 621 trout returning 378 trout for a weekly rod average 3.4 Watching the weather forecast was the key to a good days fishing, when we enjoyed light winds & warmer air temperatures the fishing especially from the bank was excellent, however on the windier colder days it wasn’t as easy.

Once again the shallows of the Thornton Arm & wood bank was popular & fished the best with floating or intermediate lines with small gold headed Montana, white & green tadpole, damsel & buzzers worked best with the mid morning onwards fishing best.

Norman Perkins fished the bank from 11am onwards & caught 10 trout Rob Naylor also fished from the bank with a dawsons olive & cruncher to record 14 trout, Scot Wilson fished the bank & caught 17 trout returning later in the week to fish with buzzers to catch a further 16. Waders or wellie`s are a must if your coming to fish the bank.

Thornton Fishing report, week ending 15/03/09

Another week when bank anglers enjoyed the best of the sport with 211 rods catching 555 trout returning 249 for a rod average 2.6

Mid morning onwards is the best time to fish with the trout tight on the bank especially when the breeze is on the water. Floating lines with buzzers, Montana, damsel & small tadpoles have worked best with the shallows along the Thornton arm opposite the lodge, wood bank, lonesome pine & farm bank been the best areas to try.

During the week Adrian Vaughan caught 10 fish for his visit including the best of the season so far a superb overwintered rainbow 8lb12oz
Other notable catches, John Gunby 10 fish black buzzer, Keith Coley fished the bank for his 12 fish as did Dave Leavesley taking his 12 from the bank on a gold headed daddy.

We are enjoying an excellent March fishing with a good forecast & another stocking due our good sport is sure to continue.

Thornton Fishing report week ending 22/03/09
A sign of spring is here as I spotted the first sand martin of the year on the water Sunday afternoon.

The surface water temperature is currently 7.5degrees

A mixed week with a strong cold wind some afternoons not helping matters, however 243 rods still caught 613 trout returning 299 for a weekly rod average 2.5

Once again the bank offered the better with the area opposite the lodge corner of the wood & lonesome pine offering the best of the sport. However top competition angler Lee Henfrey fished from the boat & caught 22 trout to 2lb8oz, returning a few days later to record a catch of 12, M. Margett & Phill Darding shared a boat & caught 18 between them to 3lb on damsels, Scott Wilson fished the bank for his catch of 17 trout taken on blobs & humongous while M. Oliver fished the bank to catch his 15 trout, father & son J. Graney & D. Graney caught 19 for their visit.

A floating line has continued to be the most productive method with a variety of patterns working from black & green tadpoles, cats whisker, blob, humongous & buzzers.

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 6.00pm
Part Day Boats 8.30am – 1.30pm / 1.30pm – 6.00pm

Thornton Reservoir fishing report week ending 29/03/09

The weather took its toll on us last week with strong north winds
keeping the boats off the water on one of the days. A total of 111 rods
caught a 189 trout returning 85 for a rod average of 1.8 with the bank
anglers once again enjoying the best of the sport.

With the water temperature at 8.5 degrees we are seeing a few more
buzzers on the water, with an improving weather forecast for this week
we should start to see buzzer patterns feature more & more in the
catches.

Dave Leavesley fished various buzzers for his 9 fish, while Tat Thomson
caught 11 for his morning session on orange blobs. J. Gunby caught 7 on
buzzers.

Full Day Boats 8.30am - 7.00pm
Part Day Boats 8.30am - 2.00pm / 2.00pm - 7.00pm
Lodge Open from 7.30am

Thornton Fishing Report Week ending 05/04/09

Another mixed weeks fishing for Thornton with 207 rods catching 350 trout returning 144 for a rod average 1.7

Our buzzer hatches are getting better with an increasing number of trout to be seen moving on the surface, however they proved difficult to tempt.

Wayne Lewin & Clive Holt both fished an afternoon session catching 6 apiece on buzzers with Wayne retuning a few days later to fish the morning session to catch 11 trout again on buzzers, with Clive fishing another evening session this time catching 10 on buzzers. M. Parrott fished an evening session from the bank by the lonesome pine to catch 6 again on buzzers while John Salisbury found a buzzer & olive hares ear worked best for his 6 fish.

Our water temperature is nearly 9 degrees in the past I have found that Thornton’s buzzer fishing really gets going once we reach the magical 10 degree mark.

With Easter next weekend I am stocking a further 1500 trout to ensure we enjoy a good bank holidays fishing, boat booking during a bank holiday period can be heavy I suggest therefore you book a boat before you travel.

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 7.15pm
Part Day Boats 8.30am – 2.00pm / 2.00pm – 7.15pm

Lodge & bank fishing available from 7.30am

Thornton Fishing report week ending 12/04/09

What a change this week or to be precise from Wednesday onwards, fish moving everywhere to ever improving hatches of buzzer, at times the surface of the reservoir has been alive with fish feeding, although at times they were not easy to tempt, however 182 rods caught 751 trout returning 389 for a rod average of 4.1 Our surface temperature is 10 degrees

Bank anglers are still enjoying good sport especially when there’s a breeze blowing along the bank; it brings the trout well within casting range. Boat & float tubers have caught all over the reservoir with a large amount of trout moving in front of the dam & across the stones.

A floating line with black buzzers size 12 – 14, small damsels, small green pea, dries small hoppers & a sparkle gnat have all taken fish.

A number of overwintered trout have been caught this week with the largest at 6lb taken by Paul Walker.

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 7.30pm
Part Day Boats 8.30am – 2.00pm / 2.00pm – 7.30pm
