Default Fewston/Swinsty Reservoirs

Does anyone know if people are catching fish on these two reservoirs lately?

As work has cut our days down to 3, I have 2 more (monday and friday) days fishing And I was thinking about fishing one or both of them sometime.

Where would the fish be in the water? Near the surface or near the bottom or inbetween? I have both sinking and floating lines. Would it be wise and take both lines?

Also what flies should I use at this time of year when the reservoirs are both full to the top and the water is cold? And the water is murky.

Thanks in advance
Arctic

You've already pointed out the variables of the water at this time of year and it would be foolhardy to go ill prepared.....Keep your options open and take all the armoury.
Its easier to write off what probably wont work....i.e. stripping a lure!(even this will have its day though)
Its more likely to be a slow presentation....be that a fry imitation, buzzer or nymph.....as for the line you will have to read the conditions on the day and try find the method by trial and error given the conditions as you see them.

Good luck

Default Last time I went

Was this time of year and the dam corner on Fewston nearest the lodge was alive with fish, I'd waded out to waist depth and was fishing a drop off with an inter line and Dawasons Olive. I had around a dozen fish to 2lbs when the cold got to me and I packed in. Be aware that the weather moves in quickly so don't get caught too far out. I also caught around 20 perch that just swam into my landing net which was hanging in the water.

Best of luck and please let us know how you get on as I'm thinking of giving it a try soon.

Andy

Andy

If your looking up the res from the dam wall, do you mean you were fishing from the right hand side or left?

I have always fished at the other end of the res. I haven't tried fishing near the dam.

I am not in a rush to fish it, though I may consider fishing it this month or February.

On the left, just down from the lodge. Other flies to try would be orange or black fritz.

Default Fewston 31/01/09

Hi, I went to Fewston yesterday with NickB.
We decided to start at the top end of Fewston (by Blubberhouses A59) but the wind was blowing the full length of the reservoir from the dam wall. It made casting awkward so next drove to the main car park and started at the dam wall.
It was as if there was only a very mild breeze here compared the the top end!
After a good couple of hours with nothing to show and no rises we moved in desperation to the 'bay of doom'! (little bay next to the dam wall - it has earned its nick-name for the fact that NickB belives there's no life in it)
I tried buzzers then a dawson's and Nick traditional wets. Nothing.
Finally to the stocking area but we were met with the strong wind directly in our faces so we cleaned our gear up and called it a day.
They have felled ALL the trees at the stocking area now! Won't give much shelter when there's a westerly wind.
Good day in lovely surroundings, a trout or 2 would have been nice but it can only get better.
Cheers, Matt.
