Default Barrhead Dams

Hi

I know the dams were drained last year, does anyone know what happened to the fish?

There used to be a few good trout in it, wild brownies, and pike also but since its been drained i dont know what happened to the fish.

I know before the fish were "rescued" when it was drained and moved to another dam, however dont know whats going on now, can anyone give me an idea of what the situation is up there?

Thanks

Scott

i am very interested in the outcome of this thread too as i grow up on the dams fishing for perch and pike and as you say their were some real big brownies in the big dam at one time , god i remember the old bubble float and fly method and it did work too ,i often thought they would become stocked and permitted at some point as it has so much potential but never happened so sad if it has truly lost its magic i may even take a trip up their tomorrow for a look...

Hi mate

i dont know if it would be worth fishing now... which is a sad state of affairs

Especially if it has been drained with no fish left then i dont know what you would manage to catch.

I know a bloke who got a 5lbs brownie from there 2 years ago on the lower dam, beautiful fish and was released back into the dam. Who knows what came of it... if it was caught and eaten, or has died to a natural cause.

It was in the bottom dam which to my knowledge was almost emptied as in drained

I think there must still be something to catch, I passed the dams on my way to my regular trout water this season plenty of times and every time there was loads of people fishing. Most of them seemed to be fishing the small one beside the road, which looked partly drained at the time, and judging by there gear they were after pike.

I used to fish there regular, at the top dam over the far left corner, there is a pond and a stream that goes past a big house..its filled with wee brownies!
One of my mates also got a large brown (just over 4lb) on the lower dam, down near the viaduct. Still plenty of perch and pike in the place.

cheers Diarmid.

great news i may give it a little go and that old house used to be called the nut house when i was a kid probably no real reason for it either other than to scare the **** out me and other kids but their are some lovely browns in that wee pond and some have reached the 2lb mark and stocked the back dam for years and years as in the winter you could watch fish jump out the dam into the small stream to breed it was quite a sight but not now ,what a shame

im your man for the dams, just having a chat about them on the phone, been targeting the huge roach that live in them, and some nice pike too. The ryatt lynn (middle dam) was left drained too long which is bloody criminal and the fishing has suffered, tha balgray (top dam) is fishing well and has done 3 brownies this year 7Ibs 9Ibs and 13Ibs.....yes true, i know the bot who caught the 13 and the 9, photos in the shops in paisley. the bottom dam(arches) has huge brownies in it and you can sometimes watch them attempt the viaduct in december/january trying to spawn. they are a superb water system and if scottish water had any sense they would be running the best fishery in scotland, all browns are natural grown on fish and im assured by older guys that before the pike went in, it was the best brownie fishing in scotland. The small pond (brock burn)that feeds the big dam is no longer managed and has become heavily choked, it was once self sustaining the brownie population on all dams but is no longer so prolific. i learned to fish on that pond 25 years ago. they are a sorry state now to what they once were and it saddens me deeply.

i really must make a go at getting my **** up their and seeing for myself but the brownie size is no joke Ive seen them in the grating in the over flow channel during the winter as they get trapped and they are big boys..

They are great catches.

What dam then alex do you think would be best the now? Coming from Barrhead direction towards newton mearns.

The Dam with the arches railway bridge was drained as well this year was it not? Also, the little pool next to the bottom one at the bottom of that wee stream thing, it always looks like it might produce fish, does anyone know if it does or not? Is it too small for any fish, or do some fish get caught in that smaller little dam?

The one just up from that was also drained? Thats the one that you reckon the fishing is now poor on?

Also when you say they attempt the viaduct, where would this be? At the bottom dam? Is this where the small inflow of water comes from? Possibly from the burn?

Sorry for asking so many questions, its just i have only ever caught one very small brownies and a few perch on the dams, just wondering if i'm aiming at the wrong places.

If you'd rather let me know via PM that would be great

Cheers

Scott

yes the fish do try to get up into the over flow channels that run under the viaduct and i cant believe that the riot was emptied too, thats the one just on the other side of the big first dam whats been going on is their a real reason are they fixing something i take it ,if so it will at least mean their should be no disturbance for a while when they are filled again..
