Default Pentlands - Harlaw and Threipmuir

Hi all, noobie alert!
I've just recently introduced my 9yo son to fishing, after about 8 or 9 years out myself. We've been piking along the canal etc, tried the spinners, floats and all that, but I was always a bit of a fly lover. We've been up the local fields for a few casting lessons, and he's getting there but the fields a bit boring.....
Looking to head for the Pentlands next weekend for our first father/son day trip with our fly gear and wondered if anyone has been to either of these ressy's recently?

Done a search, but all I could find here was loads of references to Harelaw, as opposed to Harlaw.

Thanks

Wow!!!
A tenner for a reservoir thats stocked every two weeks???
That is a bargain, cheers Scott.

Don't really care about tactics now, I'm sure for only a tenner we'll enjoy ourselves anyway!

Threipmuir has been very slow recently though I had 2 decent fish there today after 3 blank trips in a row. Harlaw seems to be fishing well from what I hear - the bailiffs will give you the low down anyway. I fished Whiteadder yesterday which is a good fun place to fish, lots of small wild browns, and very friendly for beginner casters as much of the bank is grazing fields with nothing nasty to snag on the back cast.

We took the dog up to Harlaw for a walk tonight, looks great. Plenty good areas for fishing, loads of fish rising, and plenty space.
Bit of a flat calm tonight though, obviously not good for the fly, but does add to the stunning scenery/atmosphere up there. Seen about 4 or 5 guys fishing.
I was standing on the dam wall wondering why I haven't been fishing for so long.......

Roll on Sunday.

I will indeed report back, unless I'm in the cream puff!!!
I think its about 7 miles from Edinburgh city centre, in Balerno. Its well signposted too, otherwise I wouldn't have found it tonight. Its pretty busy up there too, so I'd imagine it would be busier on a Sundays being a mian gateway to the hills. Plenty space for parking on the road though, if the car park is full, which it was tonight.

hi Neil, i too would be intrested to find out how you get on, had a look at their website but a lot of it seems to be out of date, my mate and i have been fly fishing for about a year now and like to try out different places so some feedback would be much appreciated. Hope you and the wee man have a great day, i'll certainly be taking my two fishing when they get a bit older

Well, I managed a morning session, but my lad was doing my head in!!!

Dad, I'm bored.
Dad, I'm cold.
Dad, I'm hungry.
Dad, the suns in my eyes....
Etc etc....

Fair do's, he's only 9 so maybe i expected too much.
As for Harlaw, well its pretty good, had a fish but it got off, no idea what size it was..... seen a few getting caught too so it seems a pretty good deal for £10. I'll be going back (alone) before the season ends for sure.
In summary, I'd recommend Harlaw, good value for money, some great looking spots and generally just a lovely place to be.

After I took my son home we watched the first half of the footy, then I fired up to Bangour for a 4 hour session and took this on a Muddler, bang on 3lb.

I left at dusk and the fish were rising all over the place. Its very well maintained and generally a great set up. Loads of different options for catch release and take 'em home too, with prices to suit everybody. Another place I'll defo be back to.

Default Update re Harlaw

After about 10 years I have decided to go back and try my luck on Harlaw. My only worry is that I was told that they have really brought down the water level?? Can anyone give me an update of the situation there and also up at Thriepie
