Default Cefn Mably

I am new to fly fishing, and this is my first post here, so hello to everyone.

I have been coarse fishing for many years and have basically got a little fed up of it and wanted a bit more of a challenge. Well I think I have found it in fly fishing. I've not caught anyhting yet !!!!

I visited Cefn Mably on Sunday afterrnoon. I didn't catch anything and a person who works there said that the fly fishing was very difficult and only 3 fish had been caught there all weekend.

There was one other guy fishing who I got talking too, he was really helpful and explained that I had taken the sport up at the wrong time of year and that the colder months are the best time of year.

The 3 fish that had been caught were hooked deep in the water, using sinking line and a green/black daddy.

Stick with it mate. I had similar situation at Garnffrwd last Friday. It's pretty much tends to be the same everywhere in August. It will pick up at Cefn Mably and you will catch a fish. In the meantime keep practising your casting and keep asking advice on here.

At this time of year, as a beginner, I'd recommend Big Well or Ravensnest. Both with flowing water and both a spits width.

Woolaston Court opens on 1st September, which is a cracking water, although Garnfrwdd is my favourite, but the fish can be wary.

Get a boat on Llandgefedd towards the end of September to the end of the season, if you want some good sport.

Good luck.

Hi Warthog
You've made a fundamental, life changing, addictive decision Many many congratulations

Now then... many a coarse convert assumes that the best way to get into fly fishing is to try still waters first. It isn't. In South Wales you have some very fine river fishing on your doorstep. Think Taff, Rhymney, Ebbw, Ewenny, and a little further afield the Usk, Monnow, Wye systems - and they will cost you far less than still waters and dumb stock fish.

In your shoes, here's what I would do: Invest in a day or half day with a local guide/instructor who will give you the basics of river fishing and hopefully get you into your first fish. Near to you, get in touch with "Bushy" on this forum. I am absolutely certain that a bit of time in his company and/or his son Kieron's will set you right.

Good luck
Dave

Hi There,

Dave is spot on.

You will soon "tire" of stillwater fishing. (Wait for the bombardment Bill )

Get stuck into the rivers, let me know your area and I'll pm some info.

Bill

Many thanks for the advice and suggestions.

Kieron has been giving me some advice about fishing LLandegfedd. So, I may give it a try this weekend. I live in Ystrad Mynach, so it's not too far away from me. The weather is going to be nice on the weekend, which is nice, but from what I understand so far, nice weather is not the best for fly fishing. Oh well, it will be good practice for me anyway. Now, all I have to do is hope that my flies that I have ordered arrive in time.

Regards,
Richard. Aged 37. Never caught anything fly fishing, but hopefully this will change over the next few weeks :-)

Hi why don't you join the llanbradach club, or the ystrad club, some good stretches of river there, grayling and trout with some course fish in there as well, very good fishing, and good fun too.
