Highlander is on a distinguished road
Default Loch Bhac Pitlochry 13th August 2008

Sadly a blank, but I did try hard both wet & dap but other than a wee bandie on a wet & a couple of half hearted takes on the dap nothing. Never fished this one but on arriving it looked absolutely brilliant.
Thought I had cracked it, weather: cloud, bit of wind & fairly warm. had been pelting it down last few days
so a pleasant change for the better or so I thought. No a bad forestry road up but at 5.5 miles from the main road I took it easy in my two drive Ignis.
Nice wee hut & bench. Noted the "no fires" notice but also noticed the fire well two of them, Guess you get bampots this far up & who was Wee Eck from Lochgelly who wrote his name in pen on the hut wall in 2005.....bloody Fifers again. Bet it has been minnowed. Info said it was stocked with Browns & Rainbows
but I'll bet it was an early season stocking as a quick glance of the returns showed large fish catches for early but petering out to 1s,2s & nil mid summer, though someone had entered nine a few days earlier so hopes were high especially with dapped Daddy Still nothing daunted, two lovely boats & no bank fishers. One local & a man & women did come up later but only stayed a couple of hours & both blanked. Local suggested I try a bit deeper than what I had been doing. Only had my floater but I added an Airflo sinking braid for last few hours but no touches. Packing up as light faded the wind dropped & a few Trout started rising but up until then I had other than the three that showed interest in my flies I only saw two other fish & one of them leaped clean out in the middle of the loch. Osprey visited me twice but circled & left. Guess it was trying to tell me something. So there you go a bit disappointing mainly as I had high hopes as the loch was a wee picture (see evening photo)

Flies used were Wet: Green Tailed Kate, Greenwell & Invicta. Others tried Soldier Palmer, Whickam, Mallard & Claret & Bibio
Dap: Daddy Long Legs & Loch Ordie

Still if it was always easy eh?

PS Just to compound my day, get back to my car, remember this is 5.5 miles up a Forestry track & the "Car Park"
by the gate could accomodate about a dozen cars & some ****** had hit my door, noo bad granted but a wee dink & some paint missing (T Cut out) . So if you were driving a blue car up to Bhac on the 13th

The two lochs are run by Pitlochry Angling club & are stocked annually but not heavily. Both have a good head of natural fish, though Bhac was a near blank for me, but I guess that was more down to me than the loch.
So not what one would call " A Wild Loch" in the strictest sense of the word but as near as, as makes little difference. Kinardochy is Brown Trout only. Permits from Pitlochry Tourist Board. About £20 for the day boat fishing only for visitors. Boats can take up to two anglers . There is a hut for shelter & lunch & access to both lochs is good, though Bhac entails a 5 mile drive up a good forestry track.

Alright blob,

When you say hoppers should we be reading Fozzy (size 6 long shank)

My mate and I like to get up there at least once a season....nice place to be,very peacefull and pretty steady fishing.Nice wee rainbows 1lb 4ozs to 1lb 12ozs on average, just the right size for that water type....no need for any silly lumps.

It turned out to be totally cloudless with long flat spells or a light and variable (very) breeze at best.Very difficult to set up any kind of coverage plan of the water as the breeze would never be in the same direction for any more than five minutes when it did give us a wee puff.

There was only the occasional oncer showing every now and then but we both decided to grind it out with dries. It was fairly slow going but if you could get the flies in front of a riser nicely, they were keen to take them.
I chose black flies because firstly, black stands out well in the stark bright light and secondly Bhac looks like one of those waters where the fish will see a fair amount of terrestrials on the menu.Having said that the water surface was very clean and the only fly that seemed to be around were very small buzzers.

A Hot One

I found that most of the fish were coming to a bulky size 12 bibio hopper on the dropper rather than the slim raider style emerger on the tail.I wondered if an even bigger fly on the cast would increase the number of out the blue chances because up untill this point everything we had caught had to be covered....which is what ye want of course but it was just a wee bit slow.I stuck on a B-400 size 10 monstrosity which is basically a cdc winged stimulator. This worked a treat in that more fish were now coming blind to the cast and the pace picked up a bit.

Very pleasant in the sunshine during the day but the temperature plummeted in the evening due to the big open sky.Despite the cold there was a cracking rise which lasted a good hour or so before it was time to pack in......cracking wee loch well worth a visit.
