As a "country" member of Christchurch Angling Club I've never been to either Hamer or White Sheet. I'm taking my brother in law, who lives down that way, fly fishing for the first time this weekend (we bought him a casting lesson for his birthday a few weeks ago). Any info or recommendations for either venue would be much appreciated.

Whitesheet is my favorite stillwater fishery. there are three lakes and on the bottom lake there is a boat. The countryside around is superb and the bottom lake is ringed with wild orchids at this time of the year.

Agree with the above, whitesheet is the better of the two. Its probably also better for the beginner IMO. Fished Hamer last year in the Airflo competition, lots of shallow water. Fish were difficult to catch, however it was plain to see that there were plenty of fish in there! Have a good one anyway.
