Scratch has a spectacular aura aboutScratch has a spectacular aura about
Default Heilen record

This one seemed to pass without much fuss ...... I was away in the lakes and in Scotland that week myself, but I don't remember hearing anything on the radio or seeing owt on the front pages .....some editors have a funny idea of 'news'

(Kind permission of Hugo Ross)

"Ronnie Mackenzie from Thurso has broken the Heilen record. Whilst fishing with boat partner Ramie Millard (2007 record holder) he landed the superb 11lbs 10 oz monster on a size 10 Golden Olive Bumble." (June 2nd)

"Now that's what I'm talkin' about"

Congratulations to Ronnie on the capture of the awesome beast. Incredible to think that Ronnie was the one to sit and watch last year whilst boat partner Rammie Millard netted the then record.....

Rammie Millard with his record Heilen fish of 10lb 12oz (8th June 2007) ....until boat partner Ronnie stole the record a year to the week later! ...Early June it is then for a little pilgrimage next year

I don't know if these guys are regulars, locals or what, or just make an annual trip, but they are doing something right. Besides, from what I've heard, even one session on Heilen is enough to cure anyone of a passion for fly fishing! These boys must have endured countless hours of torment on a seemingly lifeless, featureless sheet of nothingness.Even if they only fish it once a year, that's regular and comitted enough by Heilen standards. Nice to see the rewards going to guys who keep the faith and put in the hard work.

Anyway...back to Ronnie. Taken on a Golden Olive Bumble too !! I dare say that the G.O.B. was tripping along on the crest of a wave (on the top dropper of course ) when the beast rolled confidently and lazily over the fly...Ronnie subconsciously recited some stuff and nonsense or other, designed to give a 2 second delay....and lifted his rod into one helluva hoop Well...that's how I like to imagine it,and I'm sure it's not that far from the truth!

Edit - Just spotted a clue in the headline.... looks like both anglers are local and regular

Get a rolling wave on there and you are as well going home, it stirs up some thing cruel. Its an amazing place 90% of it is less than 3ft deep, the deepest place is 5ft. jim

Aint it funny how the fellow who caught the record last year was chastised on this forum for chapping it and low and behold record gone again this year
same old drivel as original thread . Well done to the angler i hope he did the fish justice ..

What gorgeous looking fish, not unlike the Lough Sheelin fish, and they have the same look of being fast growing insect eaters rather than being cannibals.

I always return my wild browns but I have no problem with the lucky anglers taking these fish, maybe they had been caught and returned as 4lbers when this would be a far more beneficial action.
