Live in Cheltenham but never been a fan of Witcombe (Usually fish Watermark ,Bushy or Farmoor). What did you catch on as a matter of interest?

I have fished there a few times and each time it has been a struggle - lots of weed to contend with (so much once it was unfishable), not much natural fly life (never seen a trout rise even on the best evenings) and not the most helpful of owners (the lady I dealt with new nothing about fishing). I have had a couple of fish out of there but they were nothing special.

Are we saying the place has improved then?

How much are they charging these days?

well i caught mine on a montana nymph and my m8 caught his on a montana boobie fly on a sinking line.

i have heard that the woman is a tightass and she dont stock the water and she has also raised the prices.

its 50/50 really to say as this time i caught my first fish their but rising the price does put me off.

I lived in Gloucester for a few years and fished WW a few times. It seems to be a good early season water (from opening to end Apr, maybe) and then Oct, when I had a couple of good days. Try nymphs on the windward shore. From May - mid Sep you might as well forget it, IMO.

The lady who owns it is not an angler and drags anglers off the water as the fishing is coming later in the summer evenings! It's her water, her choice, but it just meant that I didn't go very often!

A guy called Jim Hunter used to take the money and give out the tickets - a nicer bloke you couldn't hope to meet, and he was a good angler too.

BTW, LM - caught any fish on my flies?

Regards,

Default witcmbe water

Just wondered if anyone has any idea what time Witcombe Water in Gloucestershire opens. Have tried ringing the fishery for the last few days but there's been no answer or answering machine!! Also any reports on how it's fishing would be good too.Thankyou. :0

Hi All, my first posting in answer to your question on Witcombe fly fishery water.
There’s a number of things that should be explained to day ticket and season holders intending to fish Witcombe water.
You are not aloud to walk round or view the pools to inspect prior to fishing.

Theirs 3 pools only two can be fished.
Theirs an old boat each on two lakes you must tie to the buoys close to the bank if you can find them.
Number 1 has not been stocked for a number of years and imposable to cast from. the banks are overgrown with willows,

Both the fishable lakes 2/3 the banks are supposed to be cut by the water board can be very hard to fish without a line tray .
Number 2/3 pools hold stock trout between 1-2lbs and introduced sometimes every quarter 3 months???
All 3 lakes get bad service weed making it very difficult to fish.
It’s fished hard by the locals when stocked, after a week it’s almost dead,
You now pay £44 a day ticket for a 6 fish limit,
Half day 3 fish limit £26
Evening 2 fish limit £19

The time to pack up is displayed in the pay desk, usually two hours before dark and before the rise, if your still fishing you get the owner balling at you, like a banshee to get off the lake if you can point out theirs still half hour to go its like being attack by a mouthfull of wasps,

“If you don’t like my rules don’t come.” YOU’RE BANNED.

Tight lines mike

Christ, I was looking forward to an update on this place as it's not too far from me. Looks a bit frighening from what's just been said. I heard it was a cracking place from guys I've chatted with over the years.

I fish ww every year. As above not much cop from May onwards but always ok early. It can be a little frustrating having to leave typically just as the fish start showing. As far as mrs grumpy is concered I usually avoid her by dealing with the old guy in the fishing office. As above he is sound as a pound, if you can't find him he will be by the bridge usually. Not sure if he is still there though. She's not that bad, I get on with her ok. Give her an old slap on the ass if she plays up, that usually puts a bit of colour in her face.

I used to fish all three lakes but recent years I only fish the first lake on the left. Think it's called number 1. Half way down the left bank, on the bend, deep slow montanna often does the trick. At the far end the trees are in the water. If it's sunny and warm Carp over 30lb bask there .

I wouldn't be put off by the list of rules and when it's on form it can be easy to get your quota. Just make sure you see the light come on by her house-that means time to go .

Chris.
