Friday 23rd May was the night Carl tried out his new float tube for the first time. Lake Hill Fishery on the Llandegla moors, North Wales was the agreed location for this first outing, I had agreed to meet him at 4pm with my tube. The weather was fine but with a strong wind which would make tubing interesting! We tackled up; inflated our tubes and carried them to the upwind shore. I helped loading Carl into his new tube with his bright blue fins and handed over his rod. He soon found out that manoeuvring with fins is an art that requires some practice! We both started with wet flies with no luck at first. As we finned across the wind to the calm side of the lake Carl got lucky and hooked into a lively fish, one christened float tube. I got fed up using wets so I changed to 3 CDC emergers, success; within 2 casts a fish buried the fly. Over the next 3hrs we caught around 8 fish each, all around the 2 – 3lb mark; the fish at this fishery are some of the strongest fighting rainbow I have caught pound for pound and I highly recommend a trip here. Prices start from £10 for a 4 hour sport ticket. Carl enjoyed his first “trip” float tubing as his wet clothes showed as he removed his waders! Fins are hard to walk in! Even chest waders only provide a certain amount of protection.
