Dear Colin,
Thanks to those of you who have volunteered to help on the Countryside Day, 15th April 2012. We are pleased to announce that Snowbee have agreed to support the day this year and on the day we will be offering a 10% discount on all Snowbee products.
On the Lakes.
Currently the weather is cold clear and crisp, with a smattering of snow - the result being, because of no rain, all the lakes are now absolutely crystal clear and, with the water bubbling warm out of the ground, as normal we are not frozen.
Some good bags are coming to the scales, with the fish being easily lured. Therefore, if you have any competency about you at all, try some smaller flies to make your day more challenging.
Fishing Tip
Catching too quickly? Your fault, not ours!
At this time of year, the fish are keen, active and hungry - therefore on first sight of anything that looks like food - i.e. a big, colourful lure - they will pounce.
This is absolutely fine if you are looking for a days fun of catching loads of fish and enjoying the fight, however if you want to make it more challenging I would suggest changing your flies.
Try
Spider Patterns - They are slim, almost invisible in the water but, used correctly, they will catch fish.
Fish them mid-water and slowly. The trout will take an interest and rise off the bottom but they will not pounce in quite the same way as the lure. They tend to just suck this fly in - At which point, you lift, gently to bag your fish.
PTN (Weighted) - #14 &16. - If the fish won't come to a spider at mid-water, the Pheasant Tail Nymph, weighted to go deep, will often do the job. Once again, fish this slowly and don't expect a pounce.
Shrimp - will generally work in much the same way as the PTN. Fish them deep. Try light or dark olive and weighted to get it down there.
In summary, for a more challenging day. Drop the lures and have a go with Spider Patterns, mid-water or PTN's/Shrimps, deep. Both being fished slow and carefully.
And Finally, a tip passed on by Brian Smart.
Sometimes fish will shy away from a brass beaded fly, particularly if the water is very clear. To overcome this, use a permanent marker and black out your bead. - Try it.
