Default Pitsford

Went bank fishing at pitsford for the first time tonight. To cut a long story short i caught four fish on buzzers between 6 and 7.30 pm and then although fish were rising everywhere i couldnt get a pull. I went through my fly box but to no avail. Any suggestions as to patterns to try in this situation as im at a loss. A lot of the fish were rising with 5 metres off the bank and i covered countless fish but never even looked like getting a reaction!

I'm not sure that the problem was with the patterns you tried, but their weight. Did you try flies tied on lighter weight hooks or even fishing one fly to reduce the weight? And what about a quicker retrieve? Fish often come up in the water later on in the rise. Might be worth giving any of the above a go.

Regards,

Mugsy

cheers, been again tonight. Had 4 again although my dad had 6. Two were on crunchers and two on buzzers. Think you could be right about the weight of the hooks as i think my flies are fishing too deep. A lot of the fish were moving close in and i think by the time my flies got there they were below the fish. Food for though definitely.

It might be worth trying something like Sugarcube Buzzers. One on the point and top dropper and a standard Buzzer in the middle.

Or a Sugarcube on the top, standard in the middle and an appropriately coloured Hopper on the top. That should keep things in the top 6 - 12" with a very slow figure 8 retrieve.

Diawl Bach, Cruncher and a small booby on the point, fished on a floater will almost certainly do the trick.

If that doesn't catch then a couple of blobs about ten feet apart on slow glass line pulled really fast through the surface will probably trick the odd one.

Thanks midlander. I did have one fish tonight with a Booby on the point and two buzzers on the droppers. The fish took the middle dropper. One of the flies above though would be far more suitable than a booby.

No problem CM. The only problem with the method outlined above is that you need the two floating flies to suspend the standard. However if you use only one on the point you can get a virtual "neutral density" presentation where the two standards pull the Sugarcube "suspender" under but sink very slowly. The point fly becomes a sacrificial. Both methods are useful.
