Smile Cwm Hedd Fishery Newport

Fished Cwim Hedd on Sunday. Loads of fish moving all day so long as the sun was hidden by clouds. As soon as the sun came out, the trout switched off. Had a couple of fish around 3.5 lb mark off the island on a daddy longlegs and lots of knocks all afternoon. They fought really well, full fins, excellent condition. It's the first time I've fished it for a couple of years and the facilities have improved enormously. One guy was fishing into a strong headwind and got 3 in about 20 mins. It's well worth a visit if you haven't been lately, I'll be back soon!

I would fish it but the website says it's closed Mondays and Tuesdays, closed after 5pm Wed Thurs. So that only leaves the weekend (probably shoulder to shoulder) and Friday.

On the few occasions I've fished it I can't say it was overly busy. There is plenty of room for up to about 15 fishermen. They've got platforms all round, plus a few off the island. I think it's worth giving it a go, it's £14 for catch and release and you keep the first fish. One criticism I would have is that the guy who takes your money in the lodge is obviously not a fisherman himself so you get your best advice from other anglers. The fish are a good size and they are in the top few feet just now, just how I like it!

The guy that takes you're money at this venue makes you feel about as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit and clearly has no knowledge whatsoever about fishing, this venue is very close to where i live but ive only visited this fishery once and i have no intention of ever fishing here again IMHO its very poorly run for fishermen, theres far too much going on at this venue, namely, horse riding, boating, rafting, camping and the list goes on, they also have groups of cubs/scouts that visit this place , please dont mis- read this post, all of the above activities have as much right here as anyone else that pays their fee, but i personally dont like to be kidded on the telephone that this is a top class fishery, my advice to anyone planning a visit here would be to drive down the road a little and by that i mean about 2 miles to Cefn Mably Fishery . this is just my opinion only , you pays ya money, and takes a chance...........tight lines......Chris.

I take your point chris 53, there are a lot of other activities going on but I can't say it's really impacted on the fishing - although I don't exactly fish it every week so I may just have been lucky on the few occasions I've been. You're right, I don't think the guy at the lodge knows his buzzers from his boobies so it doesn't instill a lot of confidence in you when you first visit the water. The other anglers I've met have been more helpful, particularly if you go and talk to them just after they've pulled out a decent fish.
Top class it's not. But on the odd occasion I've been there, I've found the fish a good size, excellent condition and fight well.
