Hi Zonnkers

Used to fish there as a teenager! I lived about 2 miles away. Their website has a report from a couple of weeks back, always remember the bailiffs being informative and helpful! Must get myself back down there soon!

Fished today , a bit harder than when the FDG fished there in November.
Could not get any response from slow nymphs but found they needed a bit of movement in the fly before they reacted.

I managed to drop 5 trout, 3 as I was about to net them and 2 in close to the bank , could not work out why as my hooks were sharp, the 2 I landed were both hooked in the top of the mouth.

I fished with zonnkers yesterday at Lakedown and have to say I was disappointed in the fishing. I found I could only get firm takes if I stripped the line back like a maniac. Yes the fish were all hooked in the top of the mouth.
One chap was going round pronouncing they were taking buzzers, I watched him fish. Buzzer fishing is not stripping the line back at lightning speed! Mind you if I was to cast like him for an hour a day I would probably 2 stone in weight in a month!
None of the fish I caught had any food in their stomachs, typical stockies reacting to something like a falling trout pellet.

Default lakedown flies

I live near lakedown so fish it relatively frequently. Here are my thoughts:
- Damsel by far is a consistent winner. Especially gold headed green with a bit of blue flash works well. Slow retrieve generally
- don't bother with specimen lake unless it looks clear. The top lake is always impacted by colour when it rains even the slightess of rain
- Other flies to try: white and green fritzy patterns work well plus a yellow damsel with eyse and flourescent pink in centre of yellow marribou tail works well to generate aggressive takes when pulled via fast figure of eight
- Good places to fish are: The wind usually blows down the lakes from 1-4 therefore fishing downwind at end of the lakes is good. Lake 2 end close to lake 3 where the lake tapers off into a point always holds fish if temp not to high so should be good now. Alternative is lake 4 off the dam
- Keep moving until you find fish

cheers

Phill

Thanks for the info Phil ,we are back down there in November with the FDG.

I had most take on lake 4 on the right side fishing towards the Dam and using a Damsel or one of my flies that friends have christened the Hamster. Did try Dries to start of but decided that the fish that were on the surface were not feeding so reverted back to Nymphs.
