Default Butterstone Report

Another great week was had for those who ventured to the loch with some resemblance to normal early season weather no snow and the cold Northerly winds were still cold but less so than previous weeks. Intermediate lines are still the No One choice of line with a selection of mini lures and small nymphs. The floating line is now beginning to feature with small traditionals, nymphs and Buzzers. The predominant colour remains black and green throughout. Clarity is still down on previous years at 1.5m as there is still a hint of green algae around; water temperature is 8’C.

Areas started off at the beginning of the week down the windward shore which was the Southeast end of the loch but by Sunday afternoon the fish had moved to the opposite end of the loch up by the lily pads and down the reed beds towards the road shore and Nether Cardney cottage.

The average size of fish is still around the 1kg mark with some cracking 4 – 5 lbs being landed too.

A Few anglers that did well over the past week: Messers Eddie and Campbell 14 fish all safely returned and all to Buzzers on a floating line. A. Menmuir 8 fish for 20 lbs, W Christie and partner 12 fish for 27 lbs S. Malcolm 6 fish for 12lbs 10 oz, J. Dallas 6 fish for 12lb 4oz. On the club front: Tap shop AC 68 fish for 195lbs 11 oz for 8 boats, Johnston FF 13 fish for 35lb 4oz 43 returned for 4boats, Dundee East End AC 39 fish for 103lbs 11 oz for 4 boats, Perth Ex Service AC 38 fish for 95lb 5oz for 5 boats, and Edinburgh post office AC 51 fish for 125lb 2oz for 7 boats.

This weeks 5 day BBC forecast starts off not to bad with sunny intervals temperatures at a moderate 10 ‘C winds around 12-15 mph from the east but towards the tail end of the week the winds will be from the South west and there will be some scattered showers temperatures will remain in the low double figures. .

The fishery continues to provide anglers with amazing sport with all areas fishing well at some point during the week as the fish moved around. Although intermediate lines are still working well more anglers have switched to floating lines as the fish have moved up in the water to some great sub surface activity. Buzzers are now working increasingly well with a team of wee Nymphs and black and green Epoxy’s being a great starting point. Diawl Bach’s are also beginning to feature well especially the holographic green version. Water clarity is still not the best at around half a metre but with algae around there is a slight tinge to the water. The temperature is now up to an acceptable 10.5’C but this is still low for this time of year.

The best areas have been mixed this week as at different times of the day most areas of the loch have been producing bountiful numbers of fish. Early in the day the South east shore is recommended but from early afternoon it’s seems be better at the other end of the loch up towards the lilies and down the reeds to the road shore. The average size of fish is now around the three lbs mark with large numbers of 4-5 lbs specimens being weighed in.

Regular anglers Messrs. Eadie and Campbell took their usual Tuesday slot and had another great day using floating lines teamed up with small nymphs and their trusty Green & Black Buzzers to take 24 on a catch and release basis. J Mollison and J McTurk also had great sport both catching six for 17lb 13oz and 12lbs 11oz respectively and S Malcolm was out and also landed 6 for 17lbs 12oz, On the club front Perth Anglers weighed in 24 fish for 60lbs 14oz for 4 boats, Perth RASC took 67 fish for 176lbs 7oz + 27 returned for 6 boats and Leslie & Glenrothes managed a very credible 72 fish for 191lbs + 23 returned for 8 boats. Newtyle and Meigle 42 fish for 105lbs 14oz for 7 boats.

This weeks 5 day BBC forecast says it is due to be wet with a few sunny spells and low winds predominantly from the south/south west with temperatures being on the cool side with a high of 13’C and evening low of 5’C.

The loch continues to fish well with the majority of anglers now resorting to floating lines with nymphs and buzzers. The remaining few who are still using slow intermediates continue to be successful with a good starting point being a Cormorant and a couple of Buzzers or Diawl Bach’s on the droppers. The water temperature is now up to the usual May temperatures at 13.5 ‘C and water clarity is around normal 1.25m for this time of year. Oxygen levels are good with the rain and cool weather we have had over the past month. Evening sessions have now started and there are some great rises to be had on the warmer evenings.

Over the past week fishing has gone back to normal early season drifts with the majority of fish being taken in the margins from just outside the harbour up past the road shore and the reeds to the lilies. The average size of fish is now around the three lbs mark with plenty of fish in the 4-5 lbs class being weighed in.

Those featuring amongst the best baskets last week included Messrs. Eadie and Campbell who took their usual Tuesday slot and had another great day on floating lines with small nymphs and their trusty Green & Black Buzzers - they returned 20 between them. I Yuill weighed in 6 for 18lbs 2oz including a lovely Rainbow of 4lb 4oz, D Kerr also weighed in 6 for 16lb 8oz, Stanley Ghillie Dave Barwick managed to scrape 6 for 13lb 12oz and Messrs. Tredgill and Scougal weighed in 10 for 24 lbs and returned a further 6. On the club front Perth Anglers weighed in 23 fish for 54lb 4oz for 4 boats, Lothian & Borders Police AC weighed 76 fish for 196 lbs and returned a further 12 for 12 boats, Bothwell & Blantyre AC 44 fish for 109lbs for 7 boats, and Gartcosh AC took 51 fish for 134lb for 11 boats.

With the past couple of weeks of sunshine the loch is fishing slightly harder than of previous weeks. There are still plenty of fish to be had if you hit on the right tack ticks. For those anglers who are coming in with big smiles and clamouring about hard fighting rainbows and blues that have smashed them, the take and the fight that ensued right to landing them in the net are almost certainly using floating lines teamed up with Diawl Bach’s and Buzzers. The Buzzers range from plain, lack with red cheeks through to holographic green Diawl Bach’s and a few anglers have even resorted to dries to great success. Water clarity is really good for this time of year with a depth of just under 3M, surface temperatures are at 15’C and 14’C at 3M.

The top fishing areas have been mixed over the past couple of weeks – sometimes the fish are being taken along the North shore to the road and opposite Nether Cardney cottage right down to Lily Bay. Yet on the following day nothing is taken there and all fish are taken on the opposite side of the loch from the start of the reeds to Burn mouth. But over the last couple of days the majority of fish have been taken on the North shore in the second cap in the trees.

Bags have been mixed over the past couple of weeks with a good selection of mid-sized rainbows being weighed in alongside some lovely blues and browns. There have also been some cracking larger browns caught over the past week with a couple of crackers tipping the scales at over 6lbs and another weighing in at over 4lbs. A few anglers that did well over the past week included Mr. Stuart who weighed in 6 for 10lbs also weighing in 6 was regular J Hutchison for 11lb 1oz and regulars Messrs. Eadie and Campbell returned around 20 to their trusty holographic green buzzers. Mr. McTurk also had a cracking day weighing in 6 for 14lbs 8oz on Thursday and Mr. Liddle managed 10 to the boat on a team of a Cormorant on the tail and a couple of Diawl Bach’s on his droppers.

On the club front Perth Civil Service weighed in 31 for 69lbs 4oz 5 boats on an evening session, on Saturday Inchinan AC weighed in 28 fish for 64lbs for 6 boats and Baseford AC 32 fish for 76lbs for 4 boats. On Sunday the Aerodrome Inn had 17 fish for 46 lbs for 5 boats, Catch 22 took 21 fish for 47lbs for 4 boats and Stormontfield AC 25 fish for 58lbs 1oz for 3 boats.

Weather conditions on the BBC’s 5 day forecast is due to be sunny spells with a chance of some small light showers a average high of 15 and a low of 5with moderate south easterly winds.

The loch remains to fish well despite the bright sunshine during the day and cold easterly winds in the evenings creating some problems for some anglers. Hatches are abundant and the fish are gorging themselves on the naturals but matching the hatch has not been so easy. Floating lines or midge tip lines are recommended along with a team of small traditionals, Buzzers and Diawl Bach. Colours vary but a good starting point would be Black Buzzers with red cheeks or holographic green, traditional Diawl Bach’s or the red head Diawl Bach. Water temperature has dropped slightly from 15’C of last week to 14.4’C and water clarity remains excellent at around 3M.

The best areas are wide spread with fish being taken on the road shore and down towards the lilies tight, tight into the reeds - you need to land your tail fly and dropper into the reeds and then tempt the fish out. The top spot at the moment though is burn mouth up to and slightly beyond the bones - to find this head up to the boat house at the far end near the top bay and you will be in the right general area.

Bags have been mixed over the past couple of weeks with a good selection of mid-sized rainbows being weighed in alongside some lovely blues and browns. Doing well last week were Mr. Gray, on holiday from the south, who had 6 for 11lb 12oz including 2 lovely brown of around 1lbs 14oz, F Paddon had six for 12 lb 4oz, Messrs. Gibson and Smeaton weighed in 12 fish for 27lb 4oz, R Eadie and A Campbell on their usual Tuesday slot returned in the range of 21 to their trusty Buzzers and Mr. McTurk of Edinburgh weighed in 6 for 11lb 4oz. A Graham weighed in 6 fish for 14lbs.

On the club front Balbeggie AC weighed in 53 fish for 123lb 2oz for 8 boats on an evening session, CSSA Rosyth had 29 fish for 69lb 9oz for 5 boats, Edinburgh Civil Service AC 11 fish for 42lb 11oz for 3 boats and Keithick AC managed 14 fish for 31lb 8oz for 4 boats. Bonnybridge AC caught 20 fish for 53 lbs.

Weather conditions on the 5 day forecast report show sunny spells with a chance of rain in the middle of the week an average high of 16 but predicting 20 + ‘C with slightly higher than of late winds coming from easterly direction.

With the change in conditions over the past week the loch has still preformed amazingly well. Tactics have been a little more on the testing side but those who hit the right method on the day are having terrific sport. Floating lines or midge tips are still the predominant choice of but some have resorted to slow glass intermediates to some good effect. Fly choice is abundant with small traditionals being used to great success with teams of Buzzers and Diawl Bach’s. Small nymphs and mini lures the likes of Damsels, Yellow Dancer and Cormorants are also taking fish on the odd occasion. Water temperature is 16’C all the way down to 3m clarity is down nominally due to the small dowsing of rain but is still at a phenomenal 3m for this time of year.

The top fishing areas are still very spread out with fish being taken on the road shore and down towards the lilies tight, tight into the reeds - you need to land your tail fly and dropper into the reeds and then tempt the fish out. The top spot at the moment though is Burn mouth up to and slightly beyond the bones and if you don’t know where to find this then head up to the boat house at the far end near the top bay and you will be in the right general area. Also now featuring is the south shore from the burn mouth down to the end of the reeds. The blues and browns still feature well in anglers' returns along with a good selection of midsized rainbows being weighed in ranging from 3 – 5 lbs.

Included amongst the anglers who did well last week were J. Harkess 6 for 23lbs and a further 6 returned, H Mailer 11 returned, J McTurk 6 for 14lb 4oz, S Malcolm 6 for 13lbs, Messrs. Smeaton and Gibson 12 fish for 30lb 15oz, Mr. Denie 6 for 18lbs and J. White 6 for 16lbs with also 1 Brown returned.

On the club front: Auchterarder AC 5 fish for 13lb 4 oz inc 6lb 10oz rainbow for 4 boats, Stanley Fly Dressers 14 fish for 31lb 9oz for 2 boats, Ciba AC 10 fish for 26lb 14oz for 5 boats, Perth RASC 31 fish for 67lb 9oz for 6 boats, Aberfoyle AC 28 fish for 40lbs for 4 boats and Ferry Fly Fishers 51 fish for 108 lbs for 6 boats.

Weather conditions on the 5 day forecast report mixed conditions of sunny spells with heavy showers mixed in for Tuesday and Wednesday moderate winds ranging from South – South Westerly Temperatures are pretty much as last week at around 16’C

At the start of the week the loch was fishing great with some fantastic rises and fish coming to the dry fly. But with the constant sun the water temp has risen around 5’C in a week and the fish are starting to become far choosier of what they take. There is still good sport to be had on the floating line first thing in the morning but as the day progresses the fish go all Spanish and have an afternoon siesta. So first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening a floating line is strongly recommended especially when teamed up with the Diawl Bach Buzzers and small traditions and even the odd tiny dry. But as the day progresses a move to a fast intermediate with mini lures will be a better option. Water temperature at the moment is up substantially fluctuating between 19’C in the morning to almost 21’C in the afternoon and this is from the surface right down to the 3M mark. Clarity is still fantastic at around 3 metres.

The annual Heart foundation charity fish off was held on Friday; a hearty thanks goes out to all who attended and raised money for such a worthwhile cause – something in the region of £1,500 was raised so well done to you all!

The best fishing areas are still the same as the past couple of weeks from the road shore down towards the lilies tight, tight into the reeds. The top spot at the moment though is still Burn mouth up to and slightly beyond the bones (the fallen tree that looks like a ribcage). To find this if you head up to the boat house at the far end near the top bay and you will be in the right general area. Also now featuring is the south shore from the burn mouth down to the end of the reeds.

The blues and browns are still feature well in angler’s returns along with a good selection of mid-sized rainbows being weighed in ranging from 3 – 5 lbs.

Including amongst the best individual baskets last week were D Prior 6 fish for 13lb 4oz including a 3lb 2oz Rainbow, R Irvine of Blairgowrie 6 fish for 14lb 8oz, R Mitchell and boat partner 10 fish for 20lb 8oz they also returned 4 Browns and 5 Rainbows. Messrs. Prior and Finch 10 fish for 25lbs, J McTurk 6 fish for 16lb 6oz, Messrs. Scougal and Wilson 9 fish for 18lb 7oz.

The Heart Foundation competition caught 50 fish for 130lbs for 23 boats, Stormontfield 23 fish for 54lb 15 for 5 boats, Perthshire FC 11 fish for 22lb 13oz for 5 boats, Fife police 24 fish for 64lb 3oz for 4 boats, Perth Civil Service AC 25 fish for 48lb 14oz for 6 boats and Blairgowrie AC 13 fish for 29lb 8oz for 6 boats.

This week’s weather prediction states it is due to be overcast with the chance of rain and a few sunny spells mixed in. Winds are due to be moderate to high topping on Tuesday at around 17mph; temperatures will be a bearable average in the low teens.

With the high winds and cold conditions predicted for the start of the week materialising very few fished as conditions were pretty rough and not condusive to fishing still those who toughed it out still had some reasonable sport up the top end of the loch were it was more sheltered. Lines were fast intermediate with mini lures. As the week progressed and the winds abated fish were beginning to show sporadically on the surface. Line choice changed to floaters and midge tips. With flies going back to small traditionals and we nymphs and buzzers. Water temp has dropped down again due to the wind and cold from 21’C to 15.8’ C water clarity is also down to around 1M.

Areas are still the same as the past couple of weeks from the road shore down towards the lilies tight, tight into the reeds. The top spot at the moment though is still Burn mouth up to and slightly beyond the bones (the fallen tree that looks like a ribcage) to find this if you don’t know head up to the boat house at the far end near the top bay and your in the right general area. Also now featuring is the south shore from the burn mouth down to the end of the reeds.

The blues and browns are still feature well in anglers returns, there are a good selection of mid sized rainbows being weighed in ranging from 3 – 5 lbs. A Few anglers that did well over the past week: On Tuesday in very difficult conditions regular angler A. Campbell managed 7 fish all happily returned, also having a good 2 days were Messers Gibson & Smeaton of Coupar Angus landing 21 fish for 56lb 10oz, S MacKay weighed in 6 fish for 17lb 12 all on buzzers and B. Pitchers of Murthley had 5 for 10lb 12 to a dry sedge. On the club front Scone aerodrome weighed in 24 fish for 56 lbs for 5 boats, Stanley AC had a great evenings fishing weighing in 45 fish for a cracking 114lb4oz for 6 boats, Dundee AC 30 fish for 64lb 10 for 8 boats.

Conditions this week are predicted to be sunny intervals with heavy showers on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday, wind is moderate to high but swirling throughout the week, temperatures are in the high teens.

In the past week conditions have been very hit and miss with bright sunshine, heavy rain and high winds making fishing a tad harder to say the least. There is still sport to be had and those who managed to hit on the right tactics landed some good catches. Line choice is varied at the moment ranging from floating lines with a long leaders or a midge tip down to a fast intermediate. Fly choice is also very varied with some anglers using dries to good effect, predominantly small traditionals, buzzers and nymphs would be the recommendation but mini lures are also taking fish. Water temperature has held pretty steady from last week and is at 15.6’C and water clarity, due to the winds stirring up the bottom, is around 1metre.

The best areas are still the same as in the past couple of weeks from the road shore down towards the lilies tight, tight into the reeds. The top spot at the moment though is still Burn mouth up to and slightly beyond the bones (the fallen tree that looks like a ribcage) and to find this head up to the boat house at the far end near the top bay and you will be in the right general area. Also now featuring is the south shore from the burn mouth down to the end of the reeds.

Over the past week some of the top catches included Messrs. Tredgill and Green who had two cracking days on Monday and Tuesday weighing in 6 for 18lb 8oz over the two days and returning a further 17 and also doing well on Tuesday were Messrs. Eadie and Campbell who returned 17 between them on their trusty Buzzers. A Smeaton and B. Gibson did well to weighing in 9 for 28 lb 9oz and on the club front Perth Anglers weighed in 19 for 50 lb 8oz for 6 boats, Stanley Fly Dressers weighed in 13 for 37lb 2oz for 3 boats and the SSEB AC weighed in 21 fish for 52lb 6oz for 9 boats. Edinburgh Civil Service 14 for 37 7 for 4 boats, and West Lothian FD had 24 fish for 59lb 7 for 5 boats.

Conditions this week are yet again going to be mixed with some heavy rain predicted for around the middle of the week also some moderate to high south westerly winds around 16/17 mph are due towards the tail end of the week.
