Hi I'm looking for a day ticket trout fishery (bank fishing) in this area.
I've only found two - Colwick Park and Willington.
I'm not sure if this info I found on Willington is up to date though. http://http://www.fisheries.co.uk/willington/index.htm because if Iclick on the link for the fishery's own site at the bottom of the page, the link is dead. I've a feeling that this lake isn't day ticket any more.
Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?
And does anyone know any other suitable venues in the area. (that are suitable for a novice fly angler).

Willington as finished being turned into
a marina i think.
you could try the larger waters.
Foremark
Carsington
Blithfield
Most are user freindly.
If you have transport
you could try Thornton reservoir
just off the M1 junction 22 where
owner ifor would put you right.

The links below may be of interest ..I have fished lakeside fishery a number of times most recently about 3 weeks ago.It is usually very well stocked with rainbows 1.5-2.5lbs and occasionally some huge fish allthough not to my rod .Lakeside is not the most scenic fishery and has a busy rail line adjacent to it but catch rates are usually high 10+ catches common. I have no recent information on the other 2 fisheries.

Yeah, as khkid says, Willington is closed. It all depends on the size of water you want to fish. Here are a few not mentioned yet, although they may mean you have to go a little further afield:
Alton Manor
Yeaveley
Fisherwick nr Lichfield (not been for years, think it still has a trout lake)
Donkhill
All the above are pretty small and suited to the novice.

You could also consider joining a club, many of which have stillwater as well as rivers and streams (e.g. Derbyshire County

The thing with last saturday is I live in mid Derbyshire (Amber Valley) but was down in the south of the county for other reasons in the morning and needed to be down there after the session too so didn't want to drive all the way back up to Chesterfield way and back. I ended up at Colwick Park but it was really windy and there was only one small part of the lake where it was sheltered enough for me to cast reasonably comfortably - I blanked!

I'm even more sure after that experience that until I become a better caster I should stick to smaller vennues, I've had a walk round Barlow and Press Manor but haven't seen Alton Manor. I think Barlow is where I'm gonna try this weekend.

Barlow is a good bet for a novice as the lakes are small and there are always plenty of fish within reach. If you are over fish there keep changing flies as they soon get fed up with what you've got on after you catch a few.

Small flies work well and don't need changing much when you hit on what they are on. Black is usually good. Buzzers under a bung work well here as well.

you really want to try Carsington which is excellent and my favourite water of all time. You need to go out in a boat though. I don't get out as much as I'd like but would be willing to share a boat with you and show you the ropes. Drop me a pm and see what we can arrange.

I used to live in Nottingham about 10 yeasrs back, not far from Colwick Park, and pretty much did most of my learning on there, so I have a bit of soft spot for the place. Don't know what its like these days but it used to be good for learning all sorts of tactics - bank or boat, lures, nymphs or dries, quite cheap too

I agree, it is the best round here in my opinion too - hard fighting well conditioned fish, and a lovely spot to fish in (Although I haven't fished Ladybower for a while and understand that is pretty good too). I also prefer the boat, but now they have opened up a bit more bank that is worth a try. Wait for a nice evening in June when there is just a slight ripple on the surface and you will have some good sport to sub-surface nymphs - and you'll be surprised how close in the fish go - try Fishtail Creek over on Millfields side as this is often a good spot.

Hi Iain, that's a very kind offer - I don't feel quite ready to go out in a boat with someone yet - I still get the occasional fly whacking my in the back of the head! But in a little while when I'm more confident I won't pierce your ear for you I might just take you up on it, later in the year maybe?

Boat fishing is not too difficult. If you are fishing from a drifting boat, you are always covering new water, you don't have to cast too far and the wind is always at your back. My regular boat partner only casts about 10 yards when boat fishing (at most) and he catches just as many fish as me, presentation being the key. As long as the flies land softly on the water the fish will not be put off.
