Default Cefn Mably Trout Lakes

I popped down to this fishery as its less than 5 mins from my house, i didnt fish it myself but had a walk around , theres plenty of fish coming out around the 2 1/2 lb mark and also saw one person with a nice rainbow of about 7lb. chatting to a few of the fisherman they all said this morning it was slow due to the cold but as the day progressed so the fishing improved, so i may give it a few hours on thursday ........A.T.B......Chris.

Cefn Mably has been fishing really well recently. I've been there quite a bit since christmas and most fish I've taken have been on a VERY slow retrieve.
Think buzzers.

Fished here today. Slow morning with all three of us fishing the lodge side without any interest on floating lines despite varying length of leader, depth, flies etc. An older gent however had three on black buzzers from this same side.

After a good fry up in the lodge we headed to the far side where a few bent rods had been spotted. The wind was fairly strong but you could cast when it died a litle between gusts. A change to intermediate with a Diawl Bach on the top dropper and a Montana with a fritz type thorax got results straight away at about five to six feet down. Caught two, lost three and two knocks. Poor scrap though with all fish. Thought my second was foul hooked as it just spun around and around on the surface. It was though hooked properly. None fought properly and just splashed on the surface. These were clearly newly stocked fish. Anyway lost my fly up a tree and didn't have one the same to replace it. The fish then weren't interested in my ordinary thorax montanas.

Decided to check on my friend who also was doing well on a DI7 and Booby fished slowly on the bottom. Headed back over to the lodge side to join my dad who had struggled against the wind. We knew there were fish here as you could see swirls and V trails as they chased coarse fry along the margins. On went a epoxy glass roach fry on the point and a sparsely dressed pheasant tail on the dropper. After just a few casts I hooked a nice fish. This fight was different, very different. The fish bored deep and stayed deep. It felt bigger than the two pounders earlier. Bigger than a normal fighting two pounder. Even my stiff Sharpes Gordon was well bent over. I was starting to think 5 pounder minimum even though it wasn't pulling line off the reel. It just stayed deep. I thought maybe a good brown. After a good five minutes or so I finally got it up to the surface. I slipped the net over a deep, full tailed and overwintered rainbow or 3lb 12oz. It hadn't taken the roach fry as I had thought but the pheasant tail nymph. A fine end to an enjoyable day.

This was my first trip to Cefn Mably but I'm sure I'll be back despite the poor fight of the newly introduced fish, as there is clearly some wiser and harder fighting fish there that maybe a little harder to tempt but gave great satisfaction in knowing they can be caught.

I have often found that you will get more fish there if you fish in to the wind.

Look from the lodge to the bottom left hand corner, usually one of the best spots, if you can get in there

Mate had a beautiful 10lb brownie a couple of months ago from there, picture perfect. He said pity it gave up as soon as it felt the hook.

Can have some great sport with Daddies, seen the lodge covered in them before !
