Default Ladybower Update

Just a quick Ladybower update. The action is furious at the minute with the fish lying well up in the water. Hot spots are the snake end of Raspberry bay and the nearest available peg to the dam wall on the opposite side of the reservoir to the fishery office.

I had a session last Saturday morning and took 4 fish in under two hours from Raspberry Bay. I popped up earlier this week and fished near the dam wall and I took 4 fish in half an hour.

The best method at the minute seems to be fishing orange dog nobblers or cats whiskers on floating line with about 9 feet of leader. A twitch back to the bank will generate some savage takes with fish competing for your lure.

As the weather warms up I will also be fishing Howden and Derwent Reservoirs for the wild brown trout.

I will be up at the reservoir tonight hoping for a rise before the cold weather moves in over the weekend.

Cheers,

Dave

Default Howden/Derwent

Hi Bob

Glad your still banging em out - I will also be fishing Howden soon but it doesn't open until the end of April, or am I wrong? Have you fished the Derwent river at Ladybower - if so any advice or info would be welcomed, by pm please.

Mick

Hi Deano,

Yes I know - I would have felt the same!! It is always difficult to get the perfect days fishing and either bagging up up quickly or not getting a touch can be really frustrating!

I took a season ticket out this year and it's a great feeling - if nothing is biting I can get the camera out or just watch the wildlife without worrying about not getting my monies worth and if I bag up quickly I can get back to the pub and trade a couple of fish for a pint or two.

I can understand how frustrating it is for people who buy day tickets on Ladybower and bag up quickly - having been there myself. When I used to go on a day ticket and had two fish quickly I used to switch tatics and go stalking the wild browns up the snake end as that used to allow me to enjoy the rest of the day I had paid for and still keep fishing.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Trugg,

Not sure when Howden will be open but I will be waiting until those long summer evening before going after the browns!

I haven't fished the Derwent at Ladybower but I have been lucky enough to have a rod on a small stretch near Darley Dale for the last twenty years.

I always used to either match the hatch on the top or use a black gold head nymph if there was no surface action - this nearly always produced results.

I can't wait to try fishing the Ladybower Derwent stretch there are a few lovley looking pools.

Cheers

Dave

As a matter of interest, who controls the fishing rights on the river ashop which runs alongside the snake pass into ladybower, and also the river derwent before it flows into howden reservoir ?
Does ladybower fisheries control the river derwent on its exit from ladybower reservoir?

With many a silvery waterbreak
Above the golden gravel,

And draw them all along, and flow
To join the brimming river,
For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever.

Thats a question thats on my mind right now. I've just called the fishery office, but no answer. Not suprising really, no doubt Alan will be in his "second home" this time of day....

If you haven't fished it before make sure you go. It's like fishing a small scottish loch in the middle of Derbyshire. There isn't a huge amount of fly life there so the fish are on the small size. But they are some of the best looking wild brownies you'll find and perfectly formed.

PTN's, GRHE and Camasunary killers work extremely well there. Fish in areas where the streams enter the lakes. I did have a 1lb 8 oz brownie from Derwent that ran me into the backing and I honestly thought I'd hooked a much bigger fish, so you may have the odd suprise. A friend of Richard W's has caught a 3lb fish from here also.

Enjoyit. And let me know how you get on. BTW It's closed on weekendds and public holidays as they don't want passing ramblers being hooked on the backcast. Also, some of bank is off limits so make sure you get a map.

I may see you there.

All the best.
MJ

Default Howden/Derwent

Cheers Moby

I can't wait to try the place and take a few pics for the old blog. RW suggested fishing Howden on a summer night to get the best out of the place. Thanks again for your info and hopefully I will see you there, so you can show me the way.
